Bought out of state and registered many times. Just paid the state tax for whatever was stated in the bill of sale, etc.
Never bought a vehicle or a vessel from Canada, have no info, sorry.

Not true.

Just make sure he gives you a canadian bill of sale with the ski, because Canada doesnt have titles.
On your way back in to the U.S., stay in the regular traffic lane, and when you reach the booth tell him you want to make a personal importation. He will wave you off to the side, you park, go in the customs building, and when they call you up tell them you need to fill out a C7501 form for a watercraft. If they tell you that you dont need one, fill one out anyways, because you do. You need this C7501 paperwork in order to get a title for the ski at secretary of state. There are no additional taxes or feees for bringing it in, but they will ask you how much the ski is valued at, or how much you payed, that they will put on the 7501 form which transfers to the title, which you are then taxed on said amount. I.E., lie and say you got it for cheap. If you do it right the first time, its no hassle.
But you absolutely need the C7501 to register the ski, customs tells you that they only require it on motor vehicles and boats, and not PWC or snowmobiles, but Secretary of State will not give you a title without te C7501 paperwork.

I got a superjet from washington and had to pay 7% GST to get it into Alberta(no PST) but if I was going to buy a PWC from the states I would say is was a gift and not bother with taxes.

just for the record ontario does have titles/ownerships for PWC's so make sure you get it and a bill of sale. Otherwise it is probably going to be a pain in the arse to register and cross the border.

What type of ski are you looking at??

I didnt know Ontario had titles, I wasnt aware of that and I didnt not have a title when I brought my ski in from Onatario.
All I had was the original canadian bill of sale, and I had no problems bringing it in. Like I said, its five minutes at customs for them to fill out your C7501 and you are all set to get a new title here in Michigan.

Honestly, start working(get a job if you dont have one) more and save up more money before you even bother buying a stand up. If you encounter any problems, you at least have money to cover the costs and replace the parts needed.

Buy something that you aren't going to be wrenching on 24/7, which is why you should buy a close to stock superjet or 750sx.

Listen to Aaron, save up more before you get a cheap ski. It doesnt have to be a round, but a ski thats in good condition and worth buying. Dont do what I did, I was in such a hurry, afraid I wouldnt find one by the time summer came so went for the project, which I enjoyed, except now I cant get it running the way it should, and nobody seems to be able to figure out whats up. With all the money Ive put into it, I could have easily bought a newer ski that works the way it should.
Im not saying Im sorry I did what I did, because I love my hull and what Ive done to it, but the motor is a different story. Im at the point now where Im replacing almost everything trying to find a problem, because nobody else can figure it out.
Just be patient and wait it out, get a job besides cutting grass, because $75 a week isnt that much, and that wont help at all through the winter where there is no grass to be cut. Maybe work out a deal with your parents where they chip in some for your birthday and christmas and stuff, then you have les to save. But dont be in a hurry and buy a ski thats going to cost more in maintenance and parts than if you would have bought a better ski to begin with.

Why would you want to buy from Canada. The better deals are usually in the U.S.I bought my first tand up ski from Mi.,second new hamshire and third from havasewer.
If the U.S. customs are as fu.... up as the Canadian do what I do call them three times to find out what is needed before you go and then if two agree go with that.
One problem I ran into was if there is a lien on it customs won,t let you bring it in
