Handling Issues ... Tubby's?

I bought a round nose a couple of years ago to replace an old square nose. Since I purchased it I can't get used to the handling. It seems to want to seek and is very unstable. It's like the front end is diving in. I put a stock ride plate on it and recently changed my intake grate from a Works top loader to an R&D top loader which appears to be a lot less aggressive. This seemed to help a bit but I still can't cruise around on this machine comfortably at over 1/2 throttle. Any chance the tubbies are my problem? They are installed about 1/4" from the bottom of the hull.

Thanks

Its not the tubbies I thought the same thing, stock rideplate can cause that bad. I changed to a D cut plate and it helped a bit, but a longer plate such as a riva groovy might be the ticket.

i love my tubbies in the surf, but i rode flatwater earlier this week for the first time in over a year. it felt so unstable and seemed much harder to ride. i think if i rode flatwater mostly i would not install tubbies. maybee i just need to get used to the feel of tubbies on flat but it definately feels different from before when i didn't have them.

Just a thought, I have a friend with a roundie who complained of similar problems. I checked out his ski for him and noticed he had installed his Tubbies backwards. Tubbies do make your ski more squirly but you should of got used to them in the 2 yrs you said you've had it. Are you sure yours are installed correctly? Post a pic

id say you are about right. it makes the front chine walk a good bit. as crab suggested dropping the back a bit with a dcut will help. otherwise you just have to stand further back and turn constantly to avoid the straightline wobble.

or remove them.:dunno:

Peeling them off was my next step especially since I only ride surf one wknd a year but I figured I would post the question here first. I'll try a longer D-cut worx ride plate that I have before pulling them off but I figured the long ride plate would just put more pressure down on the front end but I guess I didn't think about the pull I would get in the back from the D-cut. Does anyone know if I re-install the tubbies a little higher to eliminate the straight line squirliness would they still be beneficial for other purposes? such as the surf?

My other contributing factor would be the shortened pole. I went back out since I changed my intake grate and I find things improved a bit. the machine actually goes into a bounce now when I stand in my foot holds. In the past it wouldn't start bouncing unless I stood right at the back. My old square use to bounce on flat water unless I put down pressure with my foot right at the front of the tray and this was with a riva groovy ride plate and I think a normal grate without the scoop or with a very mild scoop.

Thanks for the replies.

I think Crab was saying to try a D cut plate, or a longer plate, not a D cut longer plate. That would be a contradiction. The longer plate will put more pressure on the nose, and might help, or a D cut might take some pressure off the nose and might help. It's time to experiment.

I have the chine walk pretty bad on my ski. I can't hold it open for very long in glassy water before I fear of a yard sale. When the water is a bit choppy I can hold open and feel completely comfortable. I have a D-cut stock plate I have been using. I tried a protec extended one and I thought it helped a good bit but it wasn't as much fun in the surf.

Best bet might be trying the longer plate, it all depends on your riding style if it will work with you or against you.

I pulled the tubbies off yesterday and it made a big difference. I typically run flat water so hopefully I don't miss them. Now I just have to get used to riding with-out them especially for lower speed and cornering I think I've lost some handling under these conditions.

I may try putting them back on but up a little higher. Earlier I mentioned that I thought they were installed a 1/4" up from the bottom of the hull but I noticed when peeling them off they were actually installed flush.

As for direction, the ends have a vertical straight piece on them, the longer vertical straight piece was pointing to the front I believe.

Thanks for the input.
