If you end up with a ticket, the judge will side with the police no matter what.

Absolutely not true. I find that if you can state your case without coming across as an ass or trying to accuse the cop of fishing for a promotion, then the judge will be more than willing to listen to you.

I have fought tickets in court and won. Be courteous, be reasonable, be prepared. And DONT be an ass.

But even where they do, the state laws may still prevail. Example: Phill & Myself ride in the Columbia river a lot. It may be damn near in Idaho, but it's still a Federal Waterway and as such, within coast guard jurisdiction. So...the coasties may not give you a ticket, but the County cops sure will.

Probably not true but from all my traffic court time the judge always sided with me. No matter what... All the tickets I wrote were legit and they knew it.

And how many of the "defendants" were well prepared and actually arguing the case, and not you, "tHE MAN", or the system?

Always remember, the man with the gun and the badge is always right. Yes sir and no sir are the appropriate answers when talking to an officer. Being a smart ass will never help. If you feel you have been mistreated, get your case in order and take it to court, let the judge decide.

I agree 100000000000%
respect and civility will get you far w/ most officers... I have always been very respectful, yes sir, no sir all that really makes it difficult for them to be mean to you, even if they are having a bad day...

Since you are asking for input....... I agree that you should just call the clerk and take care of it. They DID give you a break by just warning you on the registration. Kinda silly not to have pfds for all three of you since "i threw it in to see if it ran", was what you stated. I would think it would be easier to deal with the cops rather than Mom, who wants to know which one of her babies coulda drowned. Respectfully, -T

I also agree 100% ...

But nobody ever said I was the brightest banana in the bunch. But I do know what the consequences will be when I open my mouth and my wife give me look of you are a complete idiot:biggrin:

Favorite line when pulled over at night:

Officer: Have you been drinking?
me: All day long officer.
Officer: What have ya been drinking?
me: Coke.
Officer: You know what I meant!
me: Alcohol?, I hardly ever touch the stuff. (I drink very little alcohol and never drink and drive)

Can't help it, its the perfect cheesy set up line.

In all seriousness, a little respect & friendliness will get you a LOOONG ways.

When I see them at the ramp, I usually stop and chat for a bit.
On my way to the ramp on Saturday, there was a lone cop at a wreck way in the backcountry. I stopped and asked if he needed help.

Be courteous. This isn't just about gaining favors. Be nice to people because it's the right thing to do.
