Giving Lithiums One Last Chance

Last season I went through 3 Antigravity batteries and gave up on them. My last battery of the season was an EarthX and it sounded promising with their battery management system. It lasted me about a month, then failed on me while in Havasu. Sent it back to them and they sent me out a replacement, they said it failed due to water intrusion. That was pretty much the end of last season for me. I started off this season running my EarthX warranty replacement from last season, it worked perfect, but I was informed by my EarthX dealer that they have a new water proof battery that they submersion tested, so they replaced my current battery that was working perfect for a new water proof one. I only got about 2 weeks on the new battery before it failed due to water intrusion. EarthX has been great to deal with, they seemed genuinely upset that it didn't last and they even took it one step further and did an air leak test on the new one and sent it to me 2 day express. Unfortunately this new one didn't last more than a month either, I haven't sent it back yet to find out what went wrong, but I'm going to be asking them for a refund instead of replacement.

I went to my local battery shop yesterday and I was going to just go back to an AGM battery, but the guy at the shop gave me an offer I couldn't refuse. I told him all about my problems with lithiums and he said I can try one of theirs and if it fails I can return it for a refund, no questions asked. He stated that AG and EarthX were failing because their batteries are probably just laptop cells that aren't meant for use in our application, especially with repeated starting. I guess Shorai makes this battery and Adventure Power markets it, so there is a big name behind this battery. It has a military grade case, which is way more than I can say for the flimsy others. The only bad part is that it's longer and taller than the other batteries. With about 5 min of modifying I still got it to fit my Cold Fusion micro case and it's still mounted in the back corner behind the exhaust manifold in my hull.

The AG and EarthX batteries used to have trouble turning over my 16mm, it used to take me about 10 min of warming it up, sometimes I even had to use a heater or heat gun to even get it to turn over fast enough to fire. But this new battery turns it over like nothing, it has wayyy more cold cranking power, so I'm already happy with it.

I know I was a big advocate for the EarthX, so sorry to the guys that bought the EarthX batteries based on what I said. I'll keep this thread updated with my results with the Adventure Power Phantom battery.

I was just going to cut open my EarthX battery and AG to check out the internals. When I opened the box to the EarthX I found this:

I cut open the AG battery that failed on me just from sitting un-used over winter (the case was bulged out and it wouldn't hold a charge any more.) It actually doesn't look bad at all inside, but there are signs of water intrusion or at least condensation. I wonder if 'Re-Boxed' means they sent me a 'new' battery with used cells?

To the OP, that battery looks very similar to the shorai LFX series batteries. It has a different terminal, but the shorai LFX batteries are not sealed at all. I have been through about 4 and they are working with me on replacements, but you have to seal them yourself. The charge port cover is a major leak point. The LFX series leaks really bad around the terminals. Be careful, shorai tech support flat out told me they are not sealed.

I don't understand why these manufacturers don't just fill the cases with with potting compound and then not have the issues

I send u some of my experience.

All lipos are Not sealed and. Have water in.
Balancer and + - are the Most difficult Parts to seal.

I opened them, get some New cells. Cut Out all cells, measure them and solder them again.
Seal the Case and put the Whole Batterie in a 5 Dollar Case. Now it should last

l saw a WPS a few weeks ago a rider had been using with total loss.He seemed to be real happy with his Chad.Anyone else have any experiance with the wps???

IDK l have been thinking about buying one for a while but for the cost it would have to last.l have an odyssey that has been working for 4 years now and still won't die.Just waiting for that now....

im running a special made ballastic for our skis. works great.
X2. Working great.

On a side note, I was talking to AG recently and they are releasing (might be released by now) a new battery which has been designed for PWC's. I don't know if its any good but for what's it's worth, it's suppose to be much better than thier last model.

Ive been running a 140cca wps on total loss. Starts my 200psi 780 with ease, also was starting my buddies tpe1107 when his antigravity got taken out by a stuck starter solenoid. So far its going strong. Charge it with a waterproof battery tender.

I don't think a 140cca would cut it for my 16mm. The 480 cca AG battery would barely turn over my 16mm, I would maybe get one revolution if it was cold. The EarthX at 405 cca was a little better, but the Phantom battery at 540cca turns it over easily.

looks interesting. Bout time they built a lith bat with a legit decent case.Too bad they built in a balance port, that will be the long term downfall for a pwc lith bat, unless you used some really good 3m seal tape over it after every time it was opened to balance charge.
I have a 20 cell anti grav,It really helps to seal them well,I use 3m seal tape on the seam and cabosil epoxy over the terminals until it is flush with top terminal. Condensation will prolly still work its way in,might help more to open it up and put 1/2 inch of high quality silicone in the bottom and on the top of the case and reseal it.
