imo as far as I know, freeride refers to ocean surf riding and freestyle would be flatwater freestyle riding. I know they are both I guess by definition a freestyle aspect of jetskiing, doing tricks etc.
Another way of thinking about it is freeride is doing what you want in terms of freestyle tricks. Freestyle is more of a judged routine, but now we have judged surf events so I dont know what im talking about. SOmeone else can answer this, hah.

in a word - hoodtricks.

Thats way off charlie. Hood tricks do seperate but there is so much more to flat wtaer with the setups and such that cant present it self in surf

In my opinion here it is......

Freeride - Usually using waves to do alot of aerials or riding a wave/large wake or the like. Generally ocean riders.

Freestyle - Generally reffers to flat water freestyle whom make their own wakes for their aerials. And yes....tricks differ. Hood tricks, throw, and jumps are more common on flat.

Flat is more of a technique/skill (if your actually trying new tricks) while surf is more of skill with big guts(if your out there going big)

competition freestyle is a judged thing. you can freestyle recreationally.

if freeride is for the surf, how could the x-h2o FREERIDE tour make a stop at lake lanier?

I believe that freeride is out riding around just for fun, and freestyle is when you start doing tricks. Both could be done in either lake, river, or sea!

That being said, kinda a rule of thumb:

Freeride - ocean surf riding/jumping, more air, hulls have to be stronger to take a bigger beating

Freestyle - Flatwater riding/jumping, more work to get the ski to do what you want, hulls have to be lighter to be able to get them out of the water more, also hulls are reshaped to let them do backflips and what not.

Both have room under the hood for lots of power, both take lots of skill... And IMO, both are a lot of fun. But being that I am living in MN right now I am limited to flatwater riding. But the surf is calling my name and has been for a while...

Hey can I start calling everyone by their first names also? I just labeled my skis by color and how the guy who sold them to me named them.

Who cares... there is no REAL definition. Lets just all go out and ride.:woot:

Why must we catigorize everything.

um only reason i cared is because i see alot of stuff for sale labeled "freestyle head porting this or that" and "freeride impeller yadda yadda"

as far as the rest of it ............. curiosity......... i come from a street bike background and basically u either were into racing or stunting....... (or both) with stunting there also seemd to be a sb category....... "parking lot pimps " (guys who just practiced slow stuff and for the most part stayed off the street) and "street riders" (guys who didnt care about their licenses or anything else and hit the streets)......... but as far as the difference in their bike set ups the only real difference seemd to be ghearing (parking lot guys usually were alot more low end and no top speed and street guys needed the top speed to run if the ******** hit the shoot)............ i was just curious as to the difference in setups and riding styles between the two

on another note............ is there another category for guys who ride in dirty ass rivers and have to jump old trees and floating refridgerators?

These are YOUR definitions, they mean different things to different people.

freestyle is generally referred to when talking about any tricks that involve either making yoru own setup wave, or doing a trick that requires no setup wave at all. it is GENERALLY done on flatwater (i.e. lake riders)

freeride is the more aggressive, big air, big tricks, big waves, ..etc. GENERALLY done in the surf. (i.e. yamaslut, havell, kenney, rossc, jetskier79, o-side crew, pancakepete, ..etc.)

wasteland's explanation was good.

9 out of 10 times.. freeride=surf, freestyle=flatwater

I would only add that freeriding isn't only aerials it riding the surf. If you watch a freeride cometition (well the ones I've seen on superjett.com) 50% of the score is for aerials and 50% is for surf riding.

it's all riding to me,
in regards to freestyle or freeride mods: usually anything to gain good powerfull bottom end acceleration or make it easier to manipulate the ski. we don't worry so much about going 75 mph in a straight line over distances. so if i can move the power curve into the first 1/2 of the throttle curve i am happy. not that i wnat a soggy top end though

racing mods tend to achieve more top end performance and stronger handling characteristics
