FootStrap Installation Questions

What kind of epoxy works well to hold down footstrap hardware to fiberglass? JB Weld, PolyGard Hi-Bond, etc. Just curious to see what works the best.

Also where is the most popular location for mounting footstraps?

look in the Tech Faq for slutties dakine front footstrap install.

I don't have the ability to weld so I got 2 1/4 in plates of aluminum and drilled big holes in the bottom plate to make room for a bolt head and small holes in the top plate for the threaded shaft. I used jb weld to hold the bots in. I will make the bolts stick up throught the turf and put the foot holds on that way. I'll cut the extra thread off after they're tightend up.

good luck, I can take some pics since I"m still installing if you like.

Yep, I saw Sluts build up ski that gave me some good ideas. That aluminum plate idea sounds like it would hold very well to the fiberglass. I was going to weld stainless acorn nuts to flat washers but then I found some stainless threaded inserts at my local hardware store. They are at the bottom of the first picture and are about .75” round at the bottom with 10-24 thread pitch. I don’t know if the will hold well in the rough surf.

I've been helping a frind of mine with an X-2 project and he used 1/4" aluminum plate, drilled it and tapped it, and we'll run bolts from the top of his strap down into the plate.

The 1/4" plate is Marine-Tex'd to the hull and has several layers of glass over it. Don't know how it's going to work, yet, though. Will keep you posted on the outcome of this install.

here's mine..

i just chopped up some fiberglass and made a paste out of FG resin....

make sure to use SS hardware, and prep the surface of the tray real well.....grind away any gelcoat as the resin will not adhere nearly as well to the gel as it will bare fiberglass..

If you're looking for no downtime - screw/silicone them straight into your tray. I did and it's been fine for the six or seven rides I've been able to put it through. Or cut the turf like idok and do it the right way. Mine's up front.

i did this mod at like 10 oclock saturday night and took it to the water sunday morning....no down time either......

and when the strap is mounted it, it pretty much camo's the turf cutouts...

I'm not too worried about down time, just would like them to stay on.

I notice some people use only one footstrap mounted front center in combination with footholds and some use two mounted up front with footholds.

Did I overbuy again and only need to use the one footstrap?

depends what kind of set up you'd like to do Chris. Are you planning on installing footholds as well? In one of your pictures, in lieu of footholds, it's got 2 staps mounted side by side a little towards the front. If you're not installing footholds and just want straps... that's an option to install side by side towards the front or mid section.. Some cats do footholds and one strap up front to give you the surfer stance (one foot forward), and still others have footholds and two straps as well. Basically, whatever floats your boat and makews you feel more comfortable with in the end.

Hey Reed, I’m going to install Rickter Footholds and one or two footstraps in the front. I do most of my riding surfer style with my left foot far forward and right foot in the back of the tray moving side to side for balance. It would be nice to make the footstraps adjustable so that you could find the right riding position while using them. Maybe I should purchase a big ¼” aluminum plate to glue in the tray and tap it with holes in various locations for testing purposes.

I tried just screwing them down into the tray but it pulled out pretty quickly. Since then I layed 2 layers of bi-axel cloth underneith where the strap mounts and then screwed the strap into that and its held for almost a year now. I noticed it is very important that you don't screw on top of the hydroturf, cause it will work itself loose much easier. Instead take a razor blade and cut out a rectangle in the turf and then bolt the strap directly to the fiberglass.

I took some thin stainless steel plate and drilled two holes through it, then pushed flanged nuts through, and glassed the entire thing to the tray, no way its every comming off and no way the stainless flanged nuts are going to pull through the stainless plate.

The flange nuts are like this, but i found some at the local hardware store with a much wider flange.

What size hardware are you looking for for the studs. Penn Engineering makes flush head studs that will press into the metal plate and then you can glass over it and then the studs will stick up through the turf.
