Foam - defoam - refoam.... why?

What if I kept my footholds in since my foam on top is good to go already....then cut the openings in the tray like you have in your pics MARK44....

Would it be fairly easy to defoam ONLY the bottom half of the ski and then put in the poly foam like you did and then refoam the little gap between the 2 part foam and the poly foam with some more 2 part foam? I was thinking maybe even just take out the bottom half of the foam and throw in some ping pong balls... 144 on ebay for 12 bucks.... but that seems weird

Yes it would be possible to refoam only the bottom I usually leave the foam just above the bond line anyways. Do you have a scupper? Now would be the time.

No, I would be installing it at this time. I was thinking the xft one, but I have no experience with them... it just looked cool.

Which holes would you cut in the ski to remove the foam below the bond line....

do you think it is important to reinforce the bond line in the rear for doing barrel rolls and such? one person told me to do this, but I dont think I could do much reinforcing with only the bottom foam removed...

If you are doing drains you will need access to the back of the ski, one side you can pull the exhaust pipe out on the other side you can go through the new scupper hole.

but I would still have to cut a hole in the tray right? to install the poly foam... Do you usually fill the gap between the poly foam on the bottom and the 2 part foam on the top with more 2 part foam? or have you never done it that way before...

No two part foam on the bottom only on top of the Dow foam I have always had the holds out or installing holds but you will be able to do it with them in no problem

What I meant was that since I would be removing the 2 part foam only on the bottom I imagine that I would have a gap in-between the existing 2 part foam and the new poly foam. I would then fill that gap with a little 2 part foam perhaps? not sure how I would get it to fill the whole gap though.... or if that would even be necessary... maybe it's better to have a gap?

How much water has come out before when you have opened those drain plugs?

Mark. Have you ever thought about just taking out all the foam on the bottom and throwing in as many ping pong balls that could possibly cram in there? That would be a GREAT drainage system to the drains in the back...

still wondering about how much water you see when you pull out those plugs too...

Frosty, you plan on just putting the original pieces of hull back on with epoxy and then putting 2 or 3 layers of 1208 or something in the tray and up the sides??

Drill holes and pour the foam in it expands a lot. I place a weight over the holes I drilled to keep the foam from expanding out or simply stand there and hold something over the drilled hole until the foam is done expanding. You may have to drill 4 or 5 holes then patch.

After a month or so of riding I get a cup of water out of my tray but on Katie's I have not got any water intrusion yet we did your ski last year and mine is 5 years old.

Remember the foam adds structural integrity the two part foam locks everything together but yes I did think of that but opted to go this rout.

I will do just that... first a layer covering the seam about 2" wide. then a larger layer to tie it all together. And like i said, since i will be custom cutting foam to fit as tight as possible it will provide me with the structural support I am looking for in the high stress tray area.

you bet... i will likely not get to it until after Daytona though. however, i have a build thread in which i will post the progress.

I have all the foam i need i just have to design my setup for how i want to drain the water out etc, then i can start fabbing the foam up.

What if you just drilled 1/2" holes with a special bit on the bottom on each side. The hole will travel up through the foam all the way to the firewall.

Make the holes in the location that MARK44 has his drain plugs.

The water should be collecting mostly at the bottom on each side right? So the water would collect mostly in that 1/2" hole area or right around it.

Next, just put in the plug that mark44 used to install the threaded brass fitting in the hole... maybe you could even use a larger hole depending on how big the plug is....

I am just looking at doing something to fix the wet foam problem without doing something so involved...

I like to have any water that is in there sit on the ski body and not sit on or in the foam this is why I have channels across the bottom and back to the drains.
I do not have threaded inserts to accept the drain plugs I drilled and tapped through the ski and into the nylon I installed. The nylon accepts and seals the threads quite well.
