Hey all, I am new to the Stand up Ski world. Been riding wave runners for years and well, they get boring fast. So I am currently looking for a stand up and hoping to learn all I can here. If anyone has any advice of what to look for in a ski and questions to ask when buying a used one I am all ears. Thank you guys for having me!

Yes I am interested as long as it will haul my big ass (230lbs) around! =) I would love to get a Superjet but not sure I would be able to afford it. Do you ride on Oroville or the afterbay in the winter?

I usually ride camp far west with a few trips to miller park in sac. I went to oroville a few times last year. Havent been doing much riding this winter since im building my ski. Ill be back on the water in a couple weeks when I get my motor back. Get a few more posts and ill pm you my number. With your budget you should be able to find a decent squarenose.

I have been watching Craigslist, but damn it seems like everything is very overpriced around here compared to the rest of the country.

Thank you for the invite! But I will need to get a wetsuit first! Are you guys wearing dry suits, or will a basic 100$ 4mm suite work?

Try to find some people local who will let you try some skis before you buy.

If not, you may have to buy something in your price range and go make friends (you have sit downs so you should be able to get out and find people.)

The ideal ski would be superjet (free ride) or sxr (race).

Budget being an issue, you may have to settle for an older superjet (free ride) or 750sx (race). You could also consider a 650sx. 650sx is a good 1st ski. Stay away from 300sx, 440, 550 and x2. If you have to buy a ski that isn't ideal, maybe put a pipe in it but other wise don't spend any money on it and save for what you really want.

The most important thing is condition. I will take a super clean worry free 650sx over a worn out and busted 750sx. It's no fun to buy your 1st ski and never get to ride it because its always broken. Clean and reliable is the most important. If you can't afford something in good condition, buy nothing and keep saving.

Good info thanks! What is a good price on a Superjet?

Would this be a good deal, also is there anything I can test or should look at when buying other than making sure it starts?

Dude, dont do what i did. I picked up a 650sx two years ago and just recently gave up and sold it. From my limited experience, if you buy a kawasaki you'll be wrenching on it more than riding it. Maybe i just got a lemon, but others seem to have had similar experiences. get a superjet. The engines are bullet proof. you might want to find an unmolested stock one....or maybe you'll want to save time and money and get a modded one. Personally i just recently went with stock for now. My skills dont warrant mods...YET ha ha ha. Rumor has it that you wont be able to get a superjet in the next couple years (they may stop offering them in the states thanks to the good ol' EPA). I personally doubt that this is true but why risk it? IF you love the sport just go buy brand new. Its not like its going to depreciate. if you get tired of it just sell it for what you paid lol. At least that's the distorted logic I'm using to justify my purchse.

Haha, i bought an 04 sxr about 5 yrs ago for something like 3400 and sold it last summer for 3300... snagged me a SJ. But ya, i like that logic too haha. My only problem was deciding on a new SJ or starting to piece together an AM hull but then i wouldn't have had enough money to ride for a year..... GL, id say just search CL for months, takes a while to find the right one at the right price.

Welcome aboard! Get out to Miller and hang with their crew. Super cool guys and are always willing to help someone get into the addiction.

650sx skis have always been good to us. They sip fuel, super reliable if clean as others have said, but have zero ponies and feel heavy. A 650 sn will eat a kaw 650 for lunch and be a lot more fun to ride. Roundnose "RN" and square nose "SN" have the same bottom deck. Whenever you get an interest in a rn, or sn, post it up here and I'm sure guys will chime in and help ya out.

pass on that roach and dont ride a bunch of skis you cant afford. it'll just be a heart breaker. save your money and just get something good , unless you find a smokin deal that you can always sell for MORE than you bought it for. if you buy a roach and get burned, you'll lose your a$$ on it and never get anything good. i always take a compression tester when i check a ski out and good battery if necessary. at 230lbs you need big power or the boat will feel like a turd. i suggest the sxr800 for a starter ski for bigger guys like us, but they usually arent cheap.

CA is very high priced. you can go a couple states over and get the same for 1/2 as much. i'm sure you saw some of my high priced goods when you were searching :)=
