my buddy had a gopro mounted on his helmet and the mount broke and now there is a gopro at the bottom of Lake Goodwin...not sure if he had a faulty mount but he didnt even hit the water that hard and it snapped in half...

lanyard, lanyard, lanyard. Our's has some 60lb kite string through the hinge pin that you tie onto something else, like your helmet or ski. If that pin breaks, then the whole back side comes off and it wasn't meant to be anyway, but it should be fine. Matt_e had it come off once already but the lanyard worked.
