First time ocean riding

Hi, just learned how to ride in the last few months, and i have a 88 650sx. Im thinking about taking it in the ocean, is there a set of procedures i need to do for the salt water? i just installed a homemade flushing system that works quite well, but ive heard that a bilge pump is advisory as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated...

bring a tow rope, extra plugs, RIDING BUDDY. Make sure if you fall you keep the ski between you and the beach, not between you and the wave. A bilge is an excellent idea as well.

I bilge isn't required, but suggested. Just becareful cause a 1 ft ocean wave is WAY WAY stronger than a 1 ft boat wake! Just be patient and learn to time the ways properly! Its the most fun place to ride a pwc by far!

It's not a good idea to ride surf alone, especially if you've never done it before. Go ride with the Pismo crew, they'll show you everything you need and how to set up your ski

Those hulls will work out there, but not very stable so hang on.....first time for me in January of 06.

thanks for all the advice guys, ive been out learning at lopez lake for a while and am ready for some more excitement. I think im definitely going to get a bilge pump, and some extra spark plugs as well.

i'd like to go out and watch the "pismo crew" first and maybe get some pointers. I went and watched for a little bit last weekend for the freestyle event, which was awesome, but couldnt stay too long as i had to study for finals at cal poly...:(

Anyways maybe we could arrange a time to go out with the pismo crew on a good learning day?

I still need to go out to lopez one more time, since im having some carburator issues.(High speed adjustment screw i believe?) But im down to go out there anytime, and besides the 21st-29th of this month im always in SLO, as i go to school here.

Thanks again guys-Tom S.

A little something that I learned my first time out. Wear gloves so that you don't let go of the handle bars. And 5 minutes of surf riding is like 3 hours of riding hard at a lake. When you start getting arm pump and get exhausted take it in for a few so that you can rest. Weak arms/hands will let your hands slide off the bars and your face eat the pole. It happens in a flash.

nothing is really necessary out there, but a things like a bilge, hood straps limiting rope, tow rope , beach dolly will come in handy and make for a better experience. just go out there and ride. my 1st time out there was on a 550 and i had no idea what i was doing but i had a blast.
just make sure you turn your idle down so your ski dies when you lose it. they dont circle well in the ocean.

why is that ?? I have yet to take my SJ in the ocean yet....:1zhelp:

I've ridden my sitdown in the ocean, though... the only other thing i can think of is get a helmut... you will hit your head off the handlebars / ski at some point..

because a wave will pick your ski up and drop it on you....

Ever stand in the shore break with a boogie board? If you place the boogie board between you and the wave... once the wave hits it, you're going down hard.

Same principle with a ski: if you're in the water and the ski is between you and the wave.... you'll end up with a face-full of fiberglass.

Go out on a day when the waves are small (1-2 feet) and clean (i.e. far apart and not choppy from wind). Surfline.com and other sites will tell you the conditions.

The only needed mod is a flush kit, if you can ride in a lake after the ocean you don't even need that.

Don't let go is very good advice. Ride conservativly so you don't crash hard and lose the ski.

Launching and getting the ski out are more of a challenge, especially w/o a dolly. It would defineatly be good to have people help you out with that the first time.
