First standup ride on my "new" standup...

So on Sunday I took the ski ('96 SXI) out for its first ride since I got it. It actually was also my first time on a standup at all and I have to say it was pretty damn fun.

I don't think I had the throttle opened up more than 25% (that thing feels like it can really haul ass) and I was trying to get the basics down. You know, turning and ummmm standing up. All and all after about an hour I wasn't doing too bad, though never really throttling more than the 25%.

One thing I did notice is that when I got brave with the throttle the boat was really porpoising (I was riding in a bay, so there is chop) like crazy. It's part of the reason I never tried going much faster because it was kind of a bitch to keep it hooked up. Could this be because I was leaning back when standing? Should I be leaning forward when I ride to keep that nose down? Do I maybe need to do some mods to the ski to stay hooked up?

WHAT? they still make then thangs??? how much HP does it have? :bs2:

Yes, try and keep your body weight centered or forward, but deff not back when just learning. BTW: what do your feet look like in the tray? try riding in a squated stand with 1 foot in front and other in back.

I noticed modest improvement when trying to consciously shift my weight forward but at one point I was trying to push the nose down and figured that wasn't typical.

I was standing pretty much as you described, so at least I have that working right :).

Yes body position plays a big part. Just try shifting your weight around and you will eventually get it. There are other things you can do to the ski but that’s later, just practice riding for now and shifting your weight how much do you weigh?

O congratulations of joining the stand up world.

I weight 165/170. So you think it is just my positioning that could be causing the porpoising?

Maybe I'm standing too far back in the tray...hmmmmm.

I won't be down tomorrow but will be this weekend.

Yes move around and find what works for you. I had and sx for my first ski and it took me a while to figure it out.

I'll give it a shot this weekend. To be honest I was just worrying about staying upright more than anything :).

So far, what keeps mine from purposing is standing in the middle and actually pulling/leaning back on the bars. I've heard to stay forward but that doesn't work as well for me right now. Leaning back seems to keep the intake in the water better, or something.

I think it's going to vary from ski to ski from person to person. The tip I got that helped a lot is to watch your throttle control. As the others have said, move arround and find what works for you, and in addition, keep in mind how it reacts to the throttle. A lot of power will lift the nose way out.

As for standing in a straight line, even weight on both feet AND both hands. Don't be afraid of the throttle in the turns.

Also note, the above advice comes from a newb.

I had the ski out again this past weekend and was porpoising like crazy. I got a little more ballsy with the throttle but it didn't really have much of an affect. I guess it just takes practice.

The only thing that made me feel better is that one of my friends gave it a try as well and just ended up falling all over the place, so at least it made me feel like I was improving (albeit slowly).

The porpoising can be tough to master on the 750 Kawis. On my SXI Pro I ended up putting a more agressive grate on. I then added a Worx Dominator extended ride plate which I shimmed with 2 washers in the front,so it was flush with the hull, and 4 washers in the back, to bring the nose down. This helped a lot. But it still takes some technique. I could get mine to plane nicely if I pushed down/forward on the bars and put them at the slightest angle(like you were gonna take the widest right turn in history). That goofy little trick came from my brother who had a 95 SXI years ago and it helped a ton. This, along with throttle control and body position( I rode with my left foot pressed to the dash, and right foot back) will get you there.

The biggest factor for losing the porpoising for me, was buying my SJ

The guy I sold my Pro to in April actually came into the place I work looking for me 2 weeks ago. The first thing he said to me was "How the hell do I stop that thing from porpoising?!?"

Honest to God, no 'Hello', no handshake, no 'How ya doin', just right to the question.

In comparison, my SJ always rides like it is on glass. And if it does start to bounce I can remedy it in about 3 seconds.

Anthony nice to see you got out on that thing. I am not sure about your ski but if you watch the better riders they all seem like they are leaning way forward when they ride.

Hell yes they porpoise. The only thing you can do is lean forward and push (not to good with tubbies :haha: They like to grab and rip you off) Or just lean back reeeeal far with your ass almost touching the water when going fast . It sucks, but they do haul a$$!
