Yamaha Tamper Caps on Carbs

I understand the carbs on the '04 to current SJs have some kind of tamper resistant "plugs".

I finally got my Christmas present (yep a FP 701 Mod pipe), and since I need to change the jets(?) what should I do?

1) send the carbs off to JSS for the trick billet mixture knobs and have John set them up for me

2) Buy a new set of used carbs for cheap and have them rebuit by JSS and keep the stocks in case they are ever needed for future emissions testing (spew, ralf, hurl).

I wouldn't spend money on something you don't have to spend money on.

Drill those mofos out and be done with it.

Give John a call and see what he can do for you. He did an awsome job on my carbs.

He did my 05's too. Like Matt said, you could just yank out the brass plugs and adjust them out of the hull. I elected for the knobs so I could tune at the ramp. I hadn't heard of any difference in the years due to emissions. John can work a couple other tricks on them while he has them too...

Here is the skinny on those knobs.......... Myself and some others have noticed the screws backing out when the billet knobs were attached, maybe something to do with the excessive weight at the ends? Who Knows, I know there are others who have not had any trouble with them......... I did, I could not figure out why my single 44 kept constantly needed tweeking on until I decided to make note of where the settings were........... ride it some and check it, and it would be turned out about a turn farther or so.......... Just my experience............

Do not let him mess with the throat body of the carbs...............

personally, find an older set of 38's or just drill the caps off.........

I specifically asked him about experiences I have heard about with the knobs coming out and he (and others) say it is more a matter of spring tension :dunno:. In my personal experience, mine turned out tight as poop. I would be very surprised if they loosen but I will definitely keep a constant eye on them.

But yes, it is borderline cheaper to get a used set. Pulling the plugs looks something like this http://www.wavejunkies.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=11&pos=29

I remember reading that in one of your previous posts... that sucks. They seam so much more functional. But, if ya need to keep making adjustments like that then it's not worth it.

UPDATE:

I would rather not send off the carbs, nor do I want to spend any money at this time on different carbs...

Is it possible to only have to remove the plugs to allow adjustment or will there be additional replacements like adjustment screws, etc.?

I DO NOT want to send them off. So please tell me what parts I will need.

If you rip out the plugs you will be able to adjust them off the manifold. Fortunately I knew where to set mine and left them be until I had time to send them off. I've also been running the JSS knobs since late May w/o issue - maybe 20-25 hours or so.

I just do not want to deal with that potential, I know John has some cool stuff and stands behind his product but if it can not be 100% I do not want it.

That is why I just want to pull the plugs and be done with it, if that is an option. (Also no more $$ to fork out)
