Is it better to use fiberglass cloth or mat to repair missing pieces on a ski?? See pic......

And also for re-inforcement on the inside hull??

avoid cheap auto fiberglass polyester resin. I would just order from us composites if it is your first go of it on a ski. :headbang:

thanks guys for the info and tips. About how much epoxy resin is needed?? If I were to fix that front and put some reinforcement on the inside sides of the hull??

LOL I agree, but this is like a winter project with hopes of being a ski that i'll let the friends use as I will be getting a Superjet in the spring.

Don't forget the additives for thickening the resin for making a filler. Us composites have many to choose from and tells about each one. I went with the sm fairing and cabosil and mix them together. Don't go cabosil alone though, its too hard to sand. This will fill your pinholes and nicks, makes a bondo like substance. You can use bondo cloth, but if your building up alot you need biaxial, it will be much faster as its thicker. It took me probably 12 plys of bondo cloth to fill my panels on my fx1, I didn't know about biaxial. Start with cloth, mat is hard to work with and takes a ton of resin.

i only say that because its not cheap. its gonna take 200$+ for supplies not counting effort ect. im sure you could find a fresh hull for the same cost or less.

actually mat is waaaay easier to work with than cloth, you can just rip it where you need to and also dont have a weave to worry about coming apart. wet mat is way more flexible than cloth. but like i said mat=adhesion cloth=strength.

Seems like I had more trouble with mat than cloth, but Im not the best with fiberglass. I had alot more problems with bubbles, and the mat coming apart as I tried to work the bubbles out(I don't think I had it saturated enough). But the 2 do have pros and cons. Dude can fix that hull resonable, is there any holes thru the hull or is it just external. I've been working over an fx1 that I bought recently and it was probably just as bad or worse. And you will never learn the tricks to fiberglass till you dive and get your feet wet!! I've spent about $50 on my fx1 and im ready for footholds, then paint.

the thing about the mat is it doesnt matter if it comes apart, the strands are made to seperate when wet with glue.

Cool, I thought I was doing something wrong. I just used cloth on what I needed. I built up the outer sides of my fx1 like alot of guys do on here to eliminate the purple plastic piece that comes down up front and I eliminated the factory rooster tail hole in the tray. All of my nicks and scrapes I used the filler.
