Faulty Brand new battery?

This might sound dumb

Well Sunday was the jetskis maiden voyage since the rebuild.. I took her out. Started fine in the garage, started fine at the dock. Put her in the water it conked out and i went to go start it. You could tell the battery was dying. (it is brand new as per the day before) Ended up just hearing the starter relay click..

So i figure the battery is dead from maybe cranking it more then riding... think nothing of it. Charged the battery over night... she clicks and that is it. I thought the starter was bad so i tested it. it works fine.. I have a new starter relay in there. Im down to 2 issues it could be...

1) Defective battery? Ive never had an issue with a battery after just 2 days of owning it but who knows...

2) The power cable from the Ebox to the battery might be corroded inside? but if i throw the engine start box on her she cranks real slow. It will not crank on just the battery. it will not crank if the battery is in there.

If i try putting the jumper cables on it with the battery in it will not crank.... could the battery really be bad after only 2 days of owning it?

what kind of battery is it?

if its one that you had to ADD the acid to it you MUST charge it first or it wont work.....odyseys, dekas and all sealed batteries come ready to rock

its an everstart from walmart for 50 bucks or whatever. Jetski battery. yes you need to add the acid, and yes i charged it at 2 amps untill my charger said done. it was FINE and now nothing after hitting FRESH water 1 day. WTF

Like i said. I feel real dumb for having to post for help on this issue

did you follow the instructions EXACTLY

first add the acid, then let it sit OPEN for 20-30 minutes.....THEN charge

EXACTLY! except i let it sit open only for like 10 min before the charge... I just dont understand why i can not get it to crank enough amps out. Ive never waited in the past and it has been fine as bad as that sounds.

I'd wager it's not your battery.

Is this your only ski? Do you have another battery in a different ski that you know starts the ski?

Put a known good battery in to test. I'll bet you have the same probs with different battery.

I've never waited either. I think the only reason why you are suppose to wait is so that gas doesn't build up and go BOOM.

get an volt meter and see what the battery reads, and then try and crank it. if the battery voltage is low take that pos back and buy a good battery! if its fully charged and when you crank it, it doesn't drop or barely drops you have a bad connection. probably a ground. you can make another ground to test it out. usually a bad cable will get really hot on the bad spot.

I think its to allow the acid time to flood the cells completely.

Interesting thought.

I don't think it applies since the liquid's already flooded the cells completely by the time you pull the provided filler and trash it. Also, slight shaking to remove the air bubbles is not recommended.

I've never read the instructions for that battery, though I own 2.

I've owned a wally world battery for over 2 years (in a XP) without the slightest issue. I wouldn't call them POS's.

Ive always owned these batterys. I buy a new one every year... never have issues normally. Well im going to go find a 9v battery for my multimeter right now so i can test her.

and with the Ebox open if i hook the Starter box up to the power lead to the starter she cranks. if i put it on the other side of the solinoid and hit the start button she cranks... its either the Wire or the battery. But like i said when i put the jump box up to it when the battery is OUT it will crank hooked to the cables. if i keep the battery in there.. Put the jump box in it it will NOT crank. just click. Its almost as if the battery is sucking all the power from the charger even though its charged.

just a guess. I don't know for sure. I am glad yours work. I hope that is the case for most but occasionally you find a lemon.

buying a battery every year is not a good savings when you can buy a jetworks and own the same one for many years. plus Art is full of information like why you have to let the acid sit before charging.:439:

Great thinking!! I'm glad you were thinking of battery safety, cuz I wasn't.

An article I just read says to tap lightly after letting it sit to release trapped gas..... It appears something still goes on even though the battery's just sitting.

Xeon: U checked you solenoid?

It is a new solinoid out of a working ski. I hear it clicking over. And my power prob reads the starter is getting power after it clicks over just not enough to make it spin.

I just hooked it up to the car. She cranked for a few seconds, I stopped it to go grab some fuel so i could start her up.. 2nd time trying all i hear is Solinoid click. FECK electical goblins

Sounds to me like a corroded connection somewhere.

You disconnected and cleaned all the connections in the path?

Were you measuring for volts or amps in that last test?

Not quite the same thing but I had my new (two weeks) eBay battery break internally once. I was jumping boat wakes and my lanyard ended up comming off, I got nothing when I tried to restart. Charger said "check" and my DMM read zero voltage & Open accross both posts. I never confirmed the internal break but I am pretty sure thats what happened.

Not the same thing you are experiencing but I have had a new battery crap out on me so it does happen. Maybe have VatoZone load test it if the voltage checks out? Ohm-ing out your battery cables also wouldn't hurt.

So i have a SMALL hunch what may be causing the issue.. Not totally sure but on the battery side of the power cable I have put a new ring terminal on. It is just a cheap chitty terminal. I just crimped that over the corroded wire. Sinking in saltwater has forever screwed my boat.

the acid needs time to react with the lead

also sounds a little like a bad ground.........let it crank (as best it can) for a minute and see if any of the cables heat up

I didn't read the entire thread, but I had similiar problems and it ended up being my stupid charger that was not charging properly.

Ridiculously long story, I now own 3 jet works batteries, a new starter, and have a new charger.
