Ethics question

This is something I've been wondering about lately.

I love my Jetcraft Turbomuff (let the jokes begin) silencer, very deep mellow tone, very small and light. The owner passed away quite a while ago, I think in the late 90's/early 2000's.

What if someone started building them, is it ok to use the same design?

Related to that, I think the 24/7 SR-71 hood is the best looking hood for a SJ ever, and it does seem like 24/7 is officially dead in pwc. What if someone started making those? Same thing or is it different?

I'm just thinking out loud. I'd love to see silencers made like the Jetcraft ones because they're free-flowing, light, etc and not obnoxious sounding like some others. I'd also like to see more SR hoods because they get cheaper on the used market that way.

Is it any different if someone started making squarenose hoods since they aren't made anymore?

Ok, I just did a search on pwctoday and found conflicting info, did the owner of Jetcraft die or not? http://www.pwctoday.com/showthread.php?t=34023

I'm confused.

Ah, maybe I just found out the source of my confusion, it was Bob Morrow of Jetcraft that died in May 2001
Sad to report that Jetcraft Engineering owner, Bob Morrow of Lake Havasu
City, was killed in a single vehicle accident Thursday. Bob was a
favorite with the local racers and will be sadly missed. Deepest
sympathy goes out to his family and friends in the Watercraft community.

it's not ok to start producing those parts as long as someone has rights to those companies.

when they go defunct (legally) or give permission someone can make "reproductions"

That how I think honestly, I guess Jetcraft might be a different story than 24/7 at this point in time.

Probably the Jetcraft silencers is what I'd rather see made also as an option for the SJ/other skis.

I think that is where the ethics come in. what stops people from ripping off parts from companies still in business?

Personal ethics, then you have the people that will buy those parts knowing full well they are buying a copy of someone else's work.

Unless it's patented, there's no law against manufacturing an identical product.
It's a "FREE" market economy.

I believe you are correct

Saddly its done all the time.
If one makes and copy's a part for him self like company X makes. That to me is not a big/huge deal.
I have seen many home made RR style poles that people make for themselv's, I personally think thats ok.
If one makes and copy's a part for every to buy from him that is just like company X makes. That is just wrong.

Just don't make an identical product. If you modify the jetcraft design a little bit then you will be OK. If you used the spiral core design in conjunction with a small resonating chamber, ie seperated the two tubes within a larger chamber, then all you are really doing is taking the jetcraft idea a little further. I personally would not duplicate the product out of respect, but I would not hesitate to use his design to inspire a new product.

or better yet, contact them and see if they would do another run or ask permission to directly copy.

You missed the point, the owner of Jetcraft died and 24/7 is in limbo or shutdown, noone really knows. Kind of gray areas I think. Jetcraft is probably more acceptable than 24/7 at this point, but for some people neither would be acceptable.

it is the exact same situation unless jetcraft was dissolved. just because the owner was dead doesn't mean that his relatives don't own the "rights" to his buisness. do a search for his business name in the state it was in. a quick search will tell you what you need to know.

Jetcraft dissolved as far as I have been able to find out. I tried contacting them several years ago hoping that someone took over but to no avail.

Darin ,
There are many types of silencers on the the market based on the Spiral core design so I don't think anyone has the sole rights to it. Ethically the hood is more difficult. I think if the moulds ore not currently owned by anyone in the business there would be no problem. I am talking ethics not law.

I am sure I am the last person you would ask, but,

If you cannot purchase the part new from the original supplier, then ethicly I would feel just fine copying the part to it's original form. I realize the company, 24/7 may or may not be in business anymore, but the way I see it, he is not producing the hoods and therefore they cannot be bought right now.

produce away.

I thought 2 brothers ran Jetcraft. They were one of Tera Laho's sponsors back in the late 90's
