Epoxy vs. 5200

Which is better to seal off the tubes(steering, cooling, trim, one-way, scupper) that go through the tray? Assuming you have cut out your whole tray to defoam.

The options are epoxy and cabosil, 5200, or "something else".

If you vote for something else, please post what it is you use.

Ultra black seems to work great for scupper sealing and other things like the midshaft sealing to the hull.

What is ultra black and where do you get it?

I've used Ultra Black before, get it a pepboys.

This time around I used Wamilton's epoxy glue (two part) really thick.

By overkill, do you mean epoxy is better but not worth the trouble to do it?

My goal is to have a bullettproof tray compartment that is airtight and never leaks. I don't EVER want to defoam again! :bad3:

the 5200 remains flexible.

the epoxy mixes do not.

I would use the 5200 on things that might vibrate or move around alot.

For the applications you mentioned, I said 5200.. and if you have the time to wait for it to dry, the 5200 original is the best. That stuff is bad ass.

Save the epoxy for you hull..

the quick set 24 hour 5200 was set up solid in under 48 hours in my shop
min. temp was 55 F
epoxy doesnt do much quicker than that

Real old thread here but just to be clear I should be fine using 5200 to seal up the front and rear of my scupper tube during the install?

Depends how big the hole is.

That glue that is used to glue in windshields in cars is some strong shait.

5200 is a structural adhesive sealant for use below the waterline - it'll stick anything!! Great stuff, even though it sucks to work with.

That's true...either would be ok for holding the scupper to the hull? The pipe is fit almost perfect in the hole...

5200 is better at sticking to metal.epoxy can eventually separate especially on aluminum if corrosion is present.

I epoxied mine before and it stuck fine, but you have to jump through some hoops to get epoxy to bond to PVC. 5200 will bond no problem if you rough up the surface. Like Mouthfulloflake said in the earlier thread, 5200 also has some flex so it holds up much better under vibration.
