I need to get some epoxy and filler for my reinforcing project and am planning on the US Composites 635 3:1 medium system, mainly for price as compared to West System. But my question is related mostly to fillers. I'm most familliar with West 404. What USC filler product is comparable with the 404? Or should I just go with 404 and the USC epoxy? Or West all the way?

Get the fast kit. Dont let the working times scare you especially in cold temps. I used west filler but used the 406 silica which is an all purpose filler.

He's correct. Get the fast hardener. Will be comparable to West 105/205 with a bit more pot life.(18-20 minutes in the cup) US Composite is just fine and LOTS cheaper. West Systems is good, but overrated. Silica is lightweiht and very hard to beat as a general purpose filler. It makes a smoother paste than most fillers and sands well also. US Composite's price on silica is excellent too.

Cool, thanks guys. The price on the USC stuff compared to West is driving my decision. Two gallons for the price of one! And I'll give the fast stuff a try. I've used the West fast system and always found its pot life too short, but always in the warm weather in the driveway. In my cool basement it makes sense to go with the faster stuff.

i just ordered some stuff from usc for footholds in my fx1 im working with a medium epoxy pot life of about 20 min. with the temps in my basement though id say the pot life would have to be MUCH more. usc is great. i was very pleased with my order.

If you're worried about pot life, then pour the resin onto a tray instead of keeping on a pot: it lasts longer that way. If you really want it to last them sit the tray on ice....

I am getting ready to order my epoxy resin from us composits. I will be using it at a temperature of 60-65 degrees. Should I go with the medium or the fast?

Absolutely buy the fast. The medium is way too slow and SJBrit is correct about pouring it in a tray so it'll have a longer pot life.

I also read the tip on us composits web site about putting it in a tray to spread it out and keep the temp down to increase the pot life. Think I will go with us composits 635 epoxy resin fast cure.

fumed silica isnt a good filler for the bond line... it is extremely stiff and will crack (not a big deal because you'll glass over it)... i would recomend glass bubbles as a filler for the bond line, it increases volume and has very low viscosity... just lay the ski on its side and pour some of that in there... let it settle flat and you are good to go, it dries hard as a rock and is still somewhat flexible... west systems is overrated if you are just going for basic reinforcing, WS is just a more clear resin, USC will dry with a yellowish hint...

I used uscomposites resin and medium hardener.
I also bought a biggen of the WS 404 Filler.
It worked great for the bod line filling, I used it to reinforce the nose piece on my square, filledsome holes in my ski, and I used it to glue on my fail extenders. It hold on the rails like you couldnt imagine.

ok so it obvios I recomend WS404 for filler
