Engine builders in California?

I'm about to buy a 95 superjet. The guy claims that the previous owner sent the engine to a professional shop in California to be ported and stroked, or somehow built, so that it's now bored to 730cc's and made to run strong at a lower compression so it will last longer. I haven't seen the ski to check compression yet but the motor looks stock in the pics. I'm thinking it sounds kind of fishy. Does anyone know of a shop that does this, what compression I should expect the motor to have, and what else I could check on the engine?

My buddy is supposed to pick up this ski and another tomorrow since I will be out of town. He doesn't know much about engines. The guy is trying to meet him where there isn't any water to test the skis.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a group k deal maybe? I don't know. Nevermind............I don't think they are in Cali.

As long as comp is even in both cylinders and it looks clean I don't see a prob not water testing it. I have never water tested any ski I have bought.

If he can't give you the shop's name and this is supposed to be such a "special" motor, make sure you are not paying a lot for this.

"Strong" is a relative term and it sounds like this ski is tired with low compression and he may be using the old "low compression is good for reliability" line on you.

Do you know how big the state of California is?

If you can, try to get a water trial and make sure it runs right. It sounds like you are relatively new to skis, so you don't want to be wrenching on it from the get-go.

I just bought a ski the other day that idled and revved great out of water, but in the water it bogged under load when I got it home. I went through the carbs last night and the internal filters were dirty. No biggie, but my guess is that you would be disappointed if you got it home and had this situation.

In general, as long as you get it at a decent price and it has 140-150 PSI in both cylinders and runs and revs, you'll be OK.

From what I understand, they are legit.... ???

I don't blame you on wanting to test before hand.... I would do the same!

If you need a professional opinion, I'm avail Today & Tomorrow.
Free of charge if brought to the shop!

Wow Paul, I really appreciate the offer. I can't take you up on it since I'm in North Carolina on vacation right now. My buddy is picking them up since the blue one is for him, but he can't drive all the way to your shop with his 1 year old with him. I guess I'll just take my chances...I know I'm getting a b pipe out of the deal no matter what. Hopefully I can use this engine for a year and then have you build me a 760 when I blow it.

Sounds legit to me - that's one way of selling a freestyle port job: more low end without having to bump up compression, which is certainly more reliable than just bumping up the compression. Now, I'm not sure who would ever run higher compression without getting the porting done first so it's an odd way to "sell" porting, but it's still a legit story. 730cc just sounds like it's had a bore and some new pistons, which can only be a good thing. If the compression is good it sounds like you got a great deal!
