Donor ski driveshaft bearing press problem

I picked up a 98 XL1200 as a donor for a Blaster 1200 project and ran into something I haven't seen before while tearing down the pump. Between the two driveshaft bearings is this funny sleeve like thing that appears to hold grease between the bearings. Problem is, cause of this sleeve, I have no idea how to get something in there to press the bearings. Anybody got some useful suggestions?

On this setup, thrust is transmitted through the rear bearing to the sleeve. The nut on shaft is required for it to work. The front bearing fits looser on the shaft than a SJ so you should be able to get it to move forward by dropping the shaft on a block of hardwood. The rear bearing pulls off the rear once the nut is removed.

Yes, those are a strange setup from Yamaha. The rear bearing is also a different size. You should be able to slide the sleeve to the side as well to help with removal.

They used this design on everything that had, or could have had a 1200 in it. The 1100s used a double row front bearing to handle heavier thrust loads.
