Does this Bendix Bushing need replaced?

Ok..So I have never had to replace one of these before and I really have never paid close attention to them.

Is this one in need of replacement? The crown of it broke away..the rest looks alright.

How hard is it to pull one of these?

Please excuse the absolute nastiness of this...It is getting thoroughly cleaned.

Yes you need to replace that bushing. A blind bearing puller with slide hammer is the easy way. But you could cut it with a dremal tool. Just be careful of the case. Then press in the new one.

But ya replace

is this a typical wear item for people or it this just because the bindex grenaded? was there a washer behind the bindex?

From what I can see through a few searches I done on here, the item just simply wears out.

There was a washer behind it. There was small slivers of metal through out from the bendix going..that could have played a role.

you can get them from mcmaster dirt cheap. I used a bolt just the right size so it bit in the bushing and spin it with a ratchet while pulling on it.

Thanks..I saw a link for the Mcmaster bushings. May have to go that route and just order a few of them in case I ever need them. I just hate paying $12 shipping on a few dollar part!

May have to order a few other things from them.

I think I am going to try the puller that uses a tap, nuts and washers. Looks like the easiest route.

You can get the old bushing out with an EZ-out.
If it were me, I would buy an OEM bushing that fits right and has the grease grooves in it.
It's not expensive.
I think I have one laying around. If you want it, just pay me shipping. (I need to check and make sure I have it, though!)

EDIT: Never mind, I can't find it.

One removal method that may work would be to find a length of round rod that has the same OD as the bendix pilot. If you fill the bushing cavity up with grease, insert rod and give it a smack with a hammer the pressure created may drive the bushing out. It may not work since the spiral groove may evacuate the grease to fast.

This works with Berdan primed shell casings but you use water instead of grease.

BTW...In case anyone runs into this..

I ordered the bushings from Boats.net for about $6.38 each. I ordered two just in case I ever need another one. Shipping was around $6 as well. They at least ship through USPS First Class which is about half the cost of UPS.

If I remember correctly, you debur the crimp, swage with a ball bearing to tighten the pocket, then drill the flash hole.

I don't reload, I just looked into it since I have a bunch of South African Surplus.

The primers do come out easily with the above method though. You can use a puch or drift down the case neck to force the primer out from the rear (on some type of anvil of course)

So what do you do with the Berdan cases after that?
Drill a center flash hole?
