Super Jet Differences in performance between OEM style wear ring, and the plastic wear rings.

Just wondering if there is a difference. I ride salt water so I tend to like the plastic ones, I replaced my OEM one this summer when the impeller started getting stuck. Any thoughts on this?

The plastic ones are OK. Make sure to get the harder plastic type. They have two different hardness levels??? Not sure on the terminology there but there are two different types of plastic liners they use.

OEM is the best, but for the price, the plastic ones are hard to beat. Plus you can press another plastic liner into the same housing, so long as the housing is in good shape.

Make to get the SBT liner as it is made from the harder dupont delrin plastic. The WSM is a softer black plastic and wears quicker.

'Wear ring' is bit inaccurate or misleading term. OEM 'wear ring' is made of cast aluminum with a thin SS liner. The liners wear very little (if at all). It is the outside edge of the impeller that wears when sand, shells, dirt, etc. are run through the pump.

Oem wear rings are reliable and offer great performance, but they are pricey to replace and fail with saltwater usage. Oem wear rings only fail from the Galvanic corrosion which occurs between the housing and the liner, causing the liner to swell and collapse into the impeller. This can happen in freshwater, but is rare and after LONG term use. Saltwater is a different story, oem wear rings used in saltwater will always swell and fail, sometimes rather quickly. Visual inspection will reveal high spots rubbed by the impeller and impeller edges will have rough hangers on the edges. In an assembled ski, you can listen carefully just after shutting off your motor for the 'ding, ding, ding' of the impeller grinding on the wear ring. (ski must be out of the water and have no sand, etc. in it.) The impeller should never touch in an oem wear ring, if it does, then it is bad.

The Solas all SS wear ring is a 'forever' wear ring because the solid SS wont ever go bad. It is also pricey and heavier, however.

A/M wear rings with replaceable plstic liners are true 'wear rings.' The liners will wear as sand, etc. is passed through the pump. Are they better or worse? Advantages include lower cost, much lower impeller wear and no issues with corrosion in saltwater. Disadvantage is once the liner wears too much, then your pump performance will suffer, and liner replacement is required.

If you ride salt alot and also the type to run lots of sand, etc. through your pump, then a/m wear ring may be a good choice.

Both WSM and SBT make wear rings with replaceable liners. The WSM housing is green in color and the housing is a little different the oem design. The WSM liner is a black plastic.
The SBT housing is much nicer than the WSM and looks very similiar to the oem housing. The liner is white and made of dupont delrin (think cutting board) which is harder and more durable the WSM liner. The SBT replacement liner can be used an upgrade for the WSM housing.

Another question. I have a WSM wear ring in my SN right now. to remove the WSM and replace with a higher quality SBT one, any tricks to doing that? Chisel the old one out? Maybe put the the housing in hot water then slide the new liner in? Thanks Jet Maniac for the good info.

I always put the new liner in the freezer for about a half hour. While the new liner is in there I use a Dremel with cutoff wheel to cut the old wear ring almost to the housing (can use probably any sort of cutting device, rotozip, sawzall, hacksaw, ect), then just pry right next to the cut with a screw driver and it should start breaking. If needed chisel a little. The wear ring should just break and pull out. Making a "V" cut seems to help get thing started sometimes. Then remove the new wear ring from freezer and it slides in. If needed a piece of wood (2x4) can be laid across the wear ring to hammer the ring in.

I've never tried the hot water, so no idea on that.

Just take wear ring and support housing with a couple scrap 2x4 or 2x6 wood blocks, then just hammer the old housing out. I have never had a hard time removing one, but a careful sawzall long cut most of the way through and then pry inward would probably be an easy for a stubborn one.

Clean the housing inside before tapping new liner in with a block of wood, if needed.

One thing to be careful of is sealing the wear ring to pump stator to prevent airleaks here. Grease, plumber's teflon paste, or silicone depending on personal preference and expected time before pulling pump again and fit/condition of the lapping parts. Shoe to pump seal, pump seal to wear ring, and wear ring to pump are all under suction so avoiding air leaks is critical to prevent cavitation, etc.
