lol i should of known Suzi would know a video of men wearing tights....

but on another note, im not afraid of any living creature. we are all dieing and if you try and avoid every little bit of danger you will lead a boring life. ill put on my wet suit and ride on, if a box jelly fish is my way to go then so be it. im not trying to be the biggest, baddest fearless man but i know what its like to think this could be the end.

is a jelly fish gonna stop you from riding?

You're right!

But it never hurts to be educated about the dangers we might face.
Had a good ride Saturday. Plenty of the regular jellies around this time of year.

I was looking at this as an "invasive species" kinda thing. They are not supposed to be in these waters.

I was looking for info on this subject so I figured I'd bring it back to the top.

I was mildly stung a couple weekends ago by a man o war and thought I was thru the worst of it after a couple days when the sting subsided and went away. Well, it flared back up yesterday and is now actually bigger, redder and angrier than even the initial sting. Apparently it is quite common for re occurance at the 7-10 day mark and can take up to 3 months to fully heal.

Thankfully I just got a small hit on my left knee and it is more of a nuisance than real pain. Tybee Island recently recorded 847 stings at that same beach which set some sort of record for the july 8th weekend.

rub some sand on it...

Lol, all my research says to absolutely never rub sand on it. Such things cause them to fire off even more toxins. The best solution is warm/hot sea water which makes sense since I kept riding and it felt better everytime I took a soaker in the water.

The next best thing is vinegar.

I got jabbed by a stingray this year.... hurt like hell for an hour unless I had it soaking in really hot water.

Did it come back a week later like mine? Any idea what species actually stung you?

I never did see what stung me but the man-o-war is supposedly the one with the returning symptoms like I am experiencing. There were plenty of the usual suspects around but they have never been a problem before. They look like the scrubbing bubble dudes off the tv adds only with a brown top.

not sure what species of stingray.. my toe turned solid purple, but was fine after an hour of steaming hot water.

With stingrays, you know when you get stung.

vinegar works with jellyfish stings.but i think it has to be put on asap to take the sting away.but i believe the venom still stays with you for some time. if it ever happens again piss on where ever the sting is right away.

Ammonia neutralizes the poison. When my little one was stung by a man-o-war when she was really little, like 2-3, an older lady came up to me on the beach and suggested I get some ammonia on her within 2 hours of the sting, to avoid the possibility of cramps, fever etc. I listened to her and she was right (from what I read afterwards). From then on, while she was still little, I always carried an ammonia/water solution with me to the beach. Easier to carry are those little "pens" that you use to rub on stings and bites. I think it's just alcohol, but it is in a pretty handy container and it's all you need.
