Cutting Rear Corners!!!

Me and my buddy have been talking lately about cutting out the lip under the rear corners of the tray. Basically cutting the bondline flat across the back of the ski out to the corners to reduce drag while surfing? My whole theory is that you can get even further tucked back into a wave with much less chance of nosing in if that lip is no longer hanging down causing all that drag. The only thing keeping me from breaking out the air saw is that I don't want to lose any cornering ability. It seems that down-facing lip helps with grip while turning. Any experience??? Help a Brutha' out! :fing02:

Removing the rear bond line won't affect the cornering ability but it definitely helps with getting the maximum upward thrust from the trim system and there's a lot less drag while just cruising at average speed.

If you don't want to cut the rear section off Riva sells some freeride sponsons that are wedge shaped to allow water to pass smoothly across the rear bond line without removing it.

thats the 1st thing I do to any FX-1.
I cant take credit for it though , Bob Morgan of shredmaster is the one who convinced me to do it originally in 93
it makes the handling much more predictable

Thanks guys, that's all I needed to hear. It's on! I don't run trim, so i'm not too worried about that part, I am just always looking for new ways to get a little deeper into waves while surfing and this seemed like a good way to do it. I rode Chris' (#0) ski and it felt cool but it's hard to compare to mine because the hull is so different. I'll give it a try tonight. Rock on!

damn, now you got me thinking about shaving them off the F1.....

Dangerboy..can you post up a pic of that on the Fx???

very curious about this, although I dont think I want the nose of my boat to ride any higher than it already does..

on the octane they would just cut the corners where the water traveled down the side of the ski.

i have those riva sponsons on my ski and i think the work well paired with tubbies.

unfortunately riva discontinued them.

spug it was good meeting you this weekend..I love that ski!!!!!!

Yeah, you too dude. You could have taken it for a spin! We have to take a trip up there and ride with some of the Auggie dudes! The wife has been talking about doing a little sightseeing up there so that would be a perfect excuse to bring the ski. :icon16:
The hull is now cut, I have to go out tomorrow and give it a try. I'm pretty pumped to see if there's much difference.

Thanks man. It doesn't look like much is cut in the pics because the turf padding is so thick in the rear, but it is totally flat. If it's there's too much side to side slide, I'll figure something out. No biggie.

Looks good, I'm sure you will notice a big difference. :fing02:

Just hope it's for the better because I modified my hull with a bunch of other stuff at the same time. :theyareontome:

I'm curious to know what the difference is. More stable, less stable, more like cutting the back of the hull or what. Keep us posted.
