300/440/550 Crankshaft ... Problem or Normal?

Hello all,

Been a while since I've posted ... but I'm finally getting back into the X-2 work on my 800cc PJS Big Bore machine.

Currently, the head is just sitting on the cylinders, not bolted down. There's no exhaust manifold on the machine, but, the intake manifold and both carbs are mounted.

When I rotate the crank by turning on either the flywheel, or the coupler it's not completely smooth ... meaning, I seem to feel a little more pressure to turn the crank at even intervals.

Now, I know this is normal when it's all buttoned up, but is this normal even when the exhaust manifold isn't even mounted, and the head is just resting flat on the cylinders?

I'm probably being paranoid since the crank rotated freely before it was put into the cases, but ... just want to be sure before I torque everything down, and give it a test fire. It's not going to be easy to find new pistons for this thing, so I need to be sure it's not going to throw a rod right off the bat.

Thanks,
Gary

If the pistons & rings are installed, then a ~slight~ change in friction is normal. Try squirting a little 2 stroke oil around the periphery of the pistins & see if that makes it smoother.

Oh yeah, pistons and rings are installed ... but I wouldn't call it "slight", it's more "noticeable", but not difficult ... if that makes sense.

There's already oil ... with the parts sitting so long, they were pretty well lubed up to make sure everything stayed in good shape.

I have this very same motor....and also have that concern of finding 85mm pistons. Gordon @PJS tells me he sold 40 of these cylinders to a guy in FLORIDA.........Which tells me he will be making piston........IF NOT CONTACT ME I HAVE 10pairs.

10 sets of pistons? Mine are currently 85.5 ... got a set, with rings? I'd like to have a spare.

And, oh yeah ... magnetism. That makes sense too since the flywheel is mounted. I'm probably just being paranoid, just don't wanna blow this damn thing up. I haven't put together a motor in about 7 years, and I pick my first to be nothing close to stock. Smart, huh?

yes, charlie is 100% correct. you will feel the flywheel magnets going over the stator coil. it will almost feel like week compresion.
