crank seal leaking on new motor.

I am curious if anyone has run into this..... Motor was rebuilt by a reputable builder. Motor was broken in Correctly, and run at most 15 hours and runs great still. When we took the flywheel cover off to replace with a new billet cover we discovered that the front crank seal, is leaking and pored out maybe 2 cap fulls or less of 2 stroke oil. How many of you have had this problem in a new motor?, and I know some oil residue is normal but how much is too much. (I was told by the builder that it is safe to run and some oil leakage is acceptable. That the flywheel cover is sealed so an air leak is most likely impossible through that area fyi). Explanation was, if its sealing water out its not allowing air in.
Run it this upcoming season and replace seals in winter or? Thoughts.

Thanks.

Good call. Thanks but we pretty much narrowed it to the seal. Run it? other opinions.

I have had the epoxy in that area leak and I never knew it till I pulled the motor down over the winter. I have no idea how long it was leaking, but if it were my motor I would fix it now just in case the flywheel cover doesn't get sealed perfectly.

do the leak test with the flywheel cover off and spray the seal with some soapy water.. 2 cups sounds like a serious problem. Sure it is not water leaking in around the starter?

So the epoxy never set up and hardened?

cap fulls, less than a few ounces. We are sure the starter is sealed, yes. it was clean 2 stroke oil, no water in there at all. (it would have been milky if it was).

my bad! cap fulls sounds better. Maybe grease from the bendix? Only way to really tell is do a leak down test. I would take it up to 9lbs. Also was 1211 used on the seals when it was put together?

The only way to tell for sure is to pressure test the motor. But yes the epoxy was done correctly. It could be a combination of the grease from the bendix mixed with a little bit of oil or a combination of oil and gas. It is possible that during the initial start up that some of the fogging oil blew past the front seal. The engines are heavily oiled and fogged when they are built as i have no idea as to how long it will be before they are installed and ran. If you cannot pressure test the motor simply clean out the area install the new cover and run the ski a week or two and re inspect it.
