Cleaning stator and flywheel solution??

Long story short, went to advance timing on my superjet pulled cover and flywheel to find one very dirty gummed up stator/flywheel.

Normally I'd jump on the break cleaner bandwagon and cleaner up.. But my love for my superjet has resorted me to questioning my judgement on this one.

Anyone see any issues with cleaning the stator down with break cleaner? Any better solution to soak it in that would be Preffered?

And finally any idea how this gunk would end up inside?

The cover seal was tight and clean all around I can't imagine it seeped threw. The bendix also was extreme dirty and sticking excessively, good thing I have a clean spare one to put back in!!!

Thanks in advance!

Be sure to check your starter seal, and stator grommet seal. That is just plain nasty!

I usually use an oil based solvent like wd40 or diesel fuel. It's not as harsh as brake clean or carb clean. Won't eat the plastic parts in there.

Good luck and get the elbow grease out.

Hmmm interesting. May have to do Quick leak down while I have it out

Another picture of the crank seal

I'm wondering if it didn't come in threw the starter. I had to replace the starter this year. When I opened the old one to clean it was very rusty and had some water visible inside

I use simple green on mine, but yours looks like it could use the brake cleaner. Another effective and safer product is citrus engine degrease.

ever figure out what it was? when i saw mine was dirty i was bummed and worried, but yours makes mine look good, I'm surprised yours even runs
