If you've never ridden in surf is it advised to try the cherry buster? I'm coming down from oklahoma with a couple of buddies and two are dead set on entering . I meet a couple of guys at havasu that said watch out its harder and more dangerous than it looks. Basically my take is to feel things out and if it feels right go for it. Whats you guys take ? Also get your cameras ready cause me and my buddies are going to be comical.

why be comical. if you really want it and want to push yourself to do it you dont want to be comical about it.

and most of us in the cherry buster contest are from new york or michigan so far where we dont get surf waves so dont feel left out.

you should enter it. in the last 2 years 3 guys have done it from the gulf coast. gulf coast waves SUCK.

just look for large breaking waves and aim for where the wave is just starting to break, gas it and look back. it's an easy trick.

Easier said then done.

You got that right!

Wave selection, timing the wave, then doing the right thing on said wave = backflip. I think I only got 1/3 on this attempt:

the hard part is committing to the right wave.

yep, thats all it is right there.

if you pin it, squat, and arch your neck, youre backflipping.

most of the flops wont end up in a broken ski or face, so, dont let that scare you either. ive landed straight on my head many times, no damage.

a backflip is just really all balls, IMHO...

if you don't let go pancakes don't hurt.

my best advice is if you want it do it. if you don't don't try.

That's good advice....Dont let go!!!!!!!! If you are holding on to the boat, pancakes don't hurt too bad.
It is definitely a lot more balls and timing than anything else. Last weekend Freestylegeek and I were doing them on Lake Michigan. I came up a little short on a couple of them but it was all because I hit the wave too early.

#1 make sure you boats hits, if its breaking up or not acting right....don't test it on a backy....
#2 get a good grip, my first attempt the ski ripped out of my hands, and its a 701 with head and pipe,...and a better grip in your footholds.....id say the foot grip is more important than hand grip....
#3 Timing is everything...the ultimate goal is to hit your nose on the lip right as its breaking....at least head high wave....squat and kick out and snap neck back...
#4 DON'T LET GO.....Hitting the water upside down doesn't hurt at all....unless something lands on you after you land in the water....HOLD ON
#5 Walk around with your balls over your shoulder, cause you just became a man....sorry for those that haven't done backflips on jetski, but your still in the kiddy pool:kiss:IMO

I agree totally. It's no where near as technical or difficult as a Barrel Roll or ReEntry. And it definitely doesn't hurt anywhere near as much as a failed roll does, IMHO.

Agreed. Rolls took me forever to learn and had many painfull landings. I think I hit my first back flip on my second try. I'm still by no means an expert though.

you wouldn't have split your lip if you wore face protection. I remember, I was the one who flipped your ski over so you could get back to shore. I flipped the next wave. Could have been you! :smashfreakB:

Thanks for all the info. I'm coming down early so I can get some ride time and get where I can time the wave. I'm bringing my backup ski so if I F-it up it really does'nt matter. Once again thanks for the help and if you hear " Hold my beer and watch this" get your cameras out.

Hold my beer and watch this

lol.. i hear ya...

you should just make the same bet with everyone on the beach i did the day i did my 1st backie. talk about motivation!

seriously though, your biggest problem is going to be fear. specially if you dont ride in the surf often. a head-high wave is DAM INTIMIDATING when youre rolling up to it. i remember talking to yamaslut a few years ago about backflips and he was still like "yeah, the 1st one or two of the day are always the hardest". you just have to focus on conquering your fear. the actual technique to it is mickey mouse details.

just remember, all you have to do is pin the throttle, squat as far down/back as you can, and look UP. the ski will do the rest. the beauty of it is even if you choose the wrong wave the first 12 times and dont get all the way around, you'll get the fear out of your system. youll see it aint no thang. once the fear is gone, game on bitches! after youve done a few, youll come up with your own style/technique, learn to adjust to different wave conditions, etc. there are some waves that youll want to muscle the ski around, etc, but let that all come to you naturally. for the 1st one, just focus on the "fear factor" and youll hit it.

someone just happened to be filming the day i did my 1st flip. :tomato: it was the last ride/session of the day, and i had a group of people waiting to punch me in the face if i didnt flip that day (that was the bet i made).
