My guess is spraying starting fluid into the carb trying to start it and than the battery died. Soon as he hooked up the jumper cables it sparked and ignited the fumes. Maybe so much starting fluid in the carbs it blew out the fuel lines and ignited them as well?

Prolly just bilge fumes and either a jumper cable spark or using cordless power tools.
In order for the AFR inside that bilge to be close enough to stoich to actually cause an explosion rather than just setting it on fire I find it hard to believe there was any liquid fuel or starter fluid that was the root cause of the initial fire.

that was a bad day to work on the ski I guess. I had a close call a couple years back, I guess my parents x-2 had a fuel tank leak and it had been sitting in the sun for several hours. latter on I decided to take her out for a spin, tossed my foot over the seat hit the start button and all I saw was a shock wave ripple through the water as little fiberglass fragments went flying! one hood latch went flying across the water but thank god the rest held together. it was a scary moment (wont let that happen again)

I had a 550 that I had installed a Westcoast gas tank. You refilled from under the hood. I forgot and poured gas in the hull fuel fuller. Duh. Well dumped most of the gas out. Then found my battery was dead. Went to jump it off. As I was removing the cables one got hung up. It touched something metal. Boom. It blew me backwards into the water. Burned my eyebrows off and singed my hair really bad.
