What is that motor originally out of? Snowmobile?

atk and ktm used them in a few of their enduro bikes and they were used in karts until the 250class faded away.these days they are highly sought after for custom moto gp aplications.lots of guys swap them into aprillia chassis.it is very unique because it is counterbalanced unlike dirtbike motors.this makes it a very smooth runner, thats why i chose it.

Neat quad!

Years back Lonestar was going to build custom full race quads using Rotax engines after the 250R was no longer produced. I don't think they sold too many....

same engine! this particular motor came from one of those quads

i think the rebel star 250 sold for about 20000$ back in 1996:bigeyes:

only butti would take apart a perfectly reliable honda and put in a ********ing seadoo motor

:fart:

kidding aside....He and motosurfer did an INCREDIBLE job on this swap

one thing he didnt mention is that this particular quad FLOATS with no rider on it! :bad:

Just ride
its gonna feel exactly the same as a 250R with a pipe and porting. I still like those two stroke quads a lot. It will have probably have good mid and top with a counterbalance, but not as much bottom. how did it work out with the axle? did you have to flip it over and what did you use for a rear brake line?

it freakin rips! i love it! the 400ex has the funnest chassis ever, hands down.the power mid to top is great.bottom end sucks but it runs great just off idle so it is still easy to ride in technical stuff.i am ordering some lower gearing for it.its way faster on the top than it needs to be.

for the rear end we flipped the carrier, relocated the brake stay, used a +5 stainless brake line and relocated the chainslide and roller.everything is backwards compared to a 250r.the pipe and kicker is on the left and the drive is on the right.the carb also angles to the right.big thanks to motosurfer for the one off intake manifold.

unfortunatly last time i rode it the the filter wasnt seated in the airbox properly and it ingested dirt:crying:so now its getting a crank rebuild and topend:grumble:i was amazed at how good it still ran with 50psi of compression:shrug: i also learned the expensive way how the rear brake needed to be set up.firt time out destroyed the rotor, rotor hub, caliper and line:eek:uch:
