carb question

i have a waveventure with a dual carb 701 in it. had to clean the carbs out recently due to sucking some nasty stuff off the bottom of the fuel tank. i thought they cleaned up pretty good. wont run on its own unless i hold choke closed. just by chance while messing with it on the beach, it was leaning on its side (carb side down) and it would stay running and accelerate like normal. while running, if i tipped back to sitting flat it would shut off. do those symptoms provide any clues as to what is wrong in the carb? (tank is 2/3 full) nothing appears to have gone through fuel seperator since i cleaned carbs

thanks

edit: different engine than the last "help me thread" :)

Assuming it ran well before the fuel incident...rebuild the carbs and make sure you replace the clear check valves inside of them(located in the pump body). ive seen those guys cause similar problems even though they "look good" from a visual perspective.

It did run good prior. I switched to res one day not knowing what lurked at the bottom of the tank. Have since drained tank and seperator has stayed clean. Check valves did have a good seat and weren't creased. Would they if bad cause the run when leaned over syndrome.

So I ran it today and with throttle wide open it would just barely get on plane. Noticed when I was done one plug was hot like normal. One was cold. Bad plug wire? It showed spark but I guess I don't check spark the correct wAy

Pulling oem plug boots off is no big deal.. The terminals just stab into the wire. Super easy to cut back.

just hate to pull off that oem plug boot if im not pretty sure thats the problem. does a cool plug mean not firing due to weak or no spark?

You can get a spark tester and put it on the plug cable and watch it. That should tell if they are getting spark.

Yeah just hate to rip off oem boot if its not the problem. The am ones don't attach very well. It def has spark but because I check that by holding the plug tip against the motor, I guess that can be misleading. Does a cool plug def mean spark problem or can it mean a fuel delivery problem
