Buying my first standup, any advice?

I would consider myself a novice rider at best, but I've always ridden on sit downs. I am actively looking to buy a stand up. I was wondering what is a good one to learn on. I am 20 years old, maybe 140 lbs, good strength/balance. I do want it to be decently quick.

I'm def looking for a used ski, and I'm really not that picky, since it's gonna be my first one, I can always upgrade to a "nice" one in the future.

I'm hearing to stick with yamaha or Kawasaki, so I guess my main question is how good are the older models of their respective standups (the superjet and sxi).

Feel free to offer any tips too... like I said, i've done a good amount of riding, but never on a stand up, so any advice is appreciated. thanks in advance!

Any year Super Jet is a good choice. 94/95 are better because they have a 701 instead of the 650 (which is actually 633), and a 96+ would be the best combination.

A Kawi SXR is a great ski to learn on, but it is definitely racer oriented thanks to it's excellent handling/hookup/weight.

Superjet...dont worry about "easiest to learn on" you'll pick it up just fine. Its really irratating when people pick SXrs bases on it's a better newbie ski....screw that

thanks for the advice... I'm not really looking into them, but only because I'm curious, about the pre-94 Superjets?

like I said I'm not really looking at them but I still wanna learn everything I can... are they junk?

They're the same except for smaller displacement and lower horsepower. They are not junk that's for sure, just a little under powered and ported.

The have enough power for a beginner.......after a season or two you will want a bigger engine, so you might as well just get a 701 to start with.

If all you can find is a 650 it will do you just fine to start.

I live in NY... it'd be put on a lake up here... for my first one I would like to spend less than $2k and still get something halfway decent...
thanks for the help so far

2k should get you a nice pre-96 with at least a 701. I own a 93 and a 94, one with a 701 and one with a 760. I picked up both of them for less than 2k each and they're great. I've noticed an unusually large number of superjets on ebay lately. Some are at good prices.
Good luck
