You know I must say Blowsion doesn't impress me much on this one...
When I did my Dakines on my X2, I used some of those "hull insert" repair kits that all the PWC Parts catalogues carry. It is basically the same exact thing as what they gave Shonuff. Only instead of having the hex head in the insert, you have to double up a nut and bolt to thread them into the hole.
I drilled a hole into my tray, too a dremel and hogged out all the foam best I could. Then I filled the hole with JB Weld Marine epoxy and threaded in the insert.
I let the epoxy cure overnight and installed the Dakines. I used the Dakine Proforms and the Dakine Twist Lock prevention pieces. I recommend them as they look as if they will prevent the material on the straps from wearing some. For the outside bolt, I just drilled through the bond flange and used a bolt/nut. This only works for an X2 and won't work on a stand up.
But here is my advise: if you use the kind of insert like Shonuff did, use a long bolt threaded all the way into the insert and tighten a nut against it. Once installed into the tray, leave the bolt in place! I took my bolt out so I could use it to install the other side and the JB Weld started oozing out of the hole! I had to work to clean out the JB Weld or else it would have filled the inside of the insert up! Once the JB weld was hardened, I used a drill and drilled the JB Weld out of the insert. Then I chased the insert with my tap that fit the inside threads. I was scared the whole time that I was going to break free the insert.
Also bear in mind that theJB weld is in an area where it may not cure for some time. There isn't a lot or air in there. I am not sure the reactions of the epoxies you will use but you want to make sure that it is fully cured before bolting on your straps.
If I was to do it all over again, I would epoxy a 1/2" wide x 1/4" thick x 2" long aluminum pieces to the hull. This way you can drill multiple hoes and adjust your straps as necessary.
I played around a bunch with where I wanted to put my straps. in the end... I put them too far forward. They work where they are but I wish I put them more in the rear. It happens. Bummer is now I have a hole and an insert inside my hull where there once wasn't one...
Oh yeah as for Blowsion... I callled them wanting to buy some epoxy and/or fiberglass to install the straps. Well I told them how I planed on mounting them. The guy there told me that he doubted my method would work and they would pull out! And look what they are selling.... You decide how you want to mount your straps. I would rather epoxy a piece of metal to your tray that you can always remove rather than go putting holes in your hull!
