Blistered pump

Hey guys a mate of mine has a 07 SXR with a Aftermarket prop, really good nick.

He road it all day Sunday no problems. Started it 2 hours ago pump is nearly completely stuck.

It's touching on 1 spot of the housing only.

I know u can soon remove some material and pull down the high spot but was wonding what could cause this to happen? And the best way to fix it??

All advise taken!
Thanks Jay

The SJ pumps are well known for this, it's corrosion between the liner and housing usually. If the pump has a replaceable liner then all you need is a new wear ring, if not then you need to buy a whole new wear ring section.

Filing down the high spot will buy you some time and keep you on the water but you will want to replace it sooner than later.

The SXR pump and wear ring section are one peice, but the wear ring is removable/replacable. It's likely corrosion between the two that is causing the issue.

I don't see a part # just the pump housing for 698.00- ouch!

SBT is remanufacturing some kawi pumps. not sure if they are doing these or not. I think Impros redoes them and I know someone said there was another company but I don't know who.

I guess I am lost- for the average guy a kawi pump "wear ring" is not replaceable. at least not it that you can unbolt it and swap it out like you can a yami or sd and others.

it can be remade- true.

what a pump from a 750 or 650 has to do with it other than that they are kawi and are the equivalent for other hulls- I do not see how that is relevant other than saying they are also pumps with no replaceable wear rings.

which helps the op in what way - I do not know.

new is the best
used is next
rebuilt may be the cheapest.

one thing I know is that grinding that spot down only speeds up the rate it will swell at, because you are making the liner thinner which lets the corrosion push it out that much easier.its a waste of time.

Thanks mate... So your sudgestion is not to grind it, mmm how do you take the liner out?

They are replaceable. You have to know where to send them to have it done, as you are correct in saying it is most generally not a user-serviceable procedure, unless the the user has the right tools and know-how to pull it off. I was under the impression that you were referring to Kurts' post as if you thought the SX-R pumps were made differently from the other kawi pumps I mentioned, my response was based on the fact that they are not.
When buying used parts such as another pump, you have to be very careful when doing so, or you could wind up in worse shape than where you started out. Just my opinion, but it's worth it to have it re sleeved by a reputable source than to try and find a "good" used one, or grinding on the one you have. Corrosion between the liner and the pump housing is like a cancer, and it may work to grind on it, or lap it smooth with compound for a little while, and depending on how much experience you have doing either of those, you may end up making it worse, performance wise. Either way, the corrosion will continue to be a problem with swelling the pump walls until the decision is made to replace the pump, or have it re sleeved.

Ok guys thanks for the help. Im taking all advice on board..

I was wondering if there is any way u can remove the ring at home??? Without destroying it?? Looking at it i'm guessing it's going to be a no but it's worth asking i figure.

The other thing i was thinking about doing is soaking the pump in a acid wash for a few days, this way it might soak it's way into the corrosion. Then allow a few hours in a warm oven/days drying.

Then soak the hole thing in a product called extroll, it's a automotive sealer, u paint it all over your panels and car when it's in bare metal to protect it, really good product. and i have used it before..

Or maby anodize it once it's been acid washed and dryed??

Might be a silly question but thought id ask..

Thanks jay
