Bilge pump auto on with motor?

Has anyone ever wired up a bilge pump directly to the charging coil? my rule 500gph bilge pump draws 1.9A according to the specs. the motor will produce a minimum of 2A and a max at 4A. i know 2A is cutting it close but it could be done.

i would like a bilge pump to always be on but not when I'm not riding. i don't really want a handlebar switch. what other ideas do you have about maybe a more convenient way of turning it on and off without opening the hood.

i was thinking maybe a relay to run off the motor's running signal, but that just over complicates things. however it is convenient.

What do you think?

I have a switch on the dash that I can turn on/off at will. Works good, just don't forget to turn off when parked.

I have a switch in the dash that I turn on when I ride and I turn it off when I am done riding.

How about a waterproof relay? Hook the trigger side up to the charging coil. Hook the switched side to the battery. Google for waterproof relay or check with West Marine.

I've had it for three or four years now, with occasional saltwater use.
Still works great.

just get a dash switch, like other people said. and dont worry about leaving it on really, my friend was riding mine and he forgot to switch it off when he parked it and i didnt care to check so it was running for like 3 hours and the battery was fine.

Battery isn't what I would worry about. The pump will get hot and worn out faster without water cooling it.

It's a small electric motor with a plastic impeller.
I doubt you'll be burning it up.

In addition to the rotary switch, Jet Ski Solutions also sells an Automatic Bilge Pump Control that uses a pressure switch in the water cooling line that turns on the bilge when the ski is in use and off when it's not. There's an override switch to use the bilge when the ski is not in the water.

That's a bad idea, IMHO.
It means the bilge pumps won't be running if you're sitting in the water with the motor off.
I see a sunk ski as potential consequence.

You missed the part about an override switch. That actually sounds like the perfect setup.

Why not turn it on when you ride and turn it off when you don't? :dunno:

Polaris makes a switching device that they used on the bilge pump kits,it uses a sensor wire off one of the charging coil leads,when it senses AC current on that wire it switches the bilge pump on,when current ceases on that wire it switches itself off.I have used these for several applications over the years.

Just add a waterproof plug or fuse holder in between the battery and pump. When you're done riding, just disconnect it. Doesn't need to be this difficult.
