Here's an interesting (and mostly irrelevant) thing about dogs. As we all know, dogs have been selectively bread from wolves for a variety of purposes over a very short time (unnatural selection). One of the traits that we have consciously (or more likely sub-consciously) selected for is dogs whose faces and expressions most resemble those of humans. Dogs look friendly and kind, wolves look sinister and scary, but only because dogs can do things like raise their eyebrows hopefully (whether they know what they're doing or not), and wolves just look at us like we're dinner. Humans are programmed to think that babies are cute (good for the babies and for the longevity of the species) and we have selected for that in dogs too: babies are distinguished by larger than normal heads for their body size, and larger, more widely spaced eyes for their head size. Ever wondered why people find all those silly lapdogs so cute? Same thing.
I'm not about to eat a dog, but there are reasons why some cultures find it distasteful to eat them. How might cows look today if we had selectively bred them for cuteness and companionship rather than food? Some people find cows eyes beautiful, but then they are so big and widely spaced....
