Super Jet Bendix spins backwards

Ok so I'm assembling a motor for my superjet. I have two bendix. I cant get my phone to post pics to show what I'm meaning. There's the rear gear that connects to the starter. Then there's the helix gear. The helix gear on the one bendix spins backwards and extends forwards. The other extends forward and doesn't spin backwards. I'm wondering which is good and which is bad.

The front gear needs to spin out and forward to engage the flywheel but also needs to be able to spin backward when engine starts so it can fall out and back to closed position.
