bendix problem

Well, just bought this ski about 2-3 weeks ago and its given me a few problems that I've already fixed. Oh yea, its a 91 superjet, all stock, except a primer kit.

Anyways, it didnt do this when I bought it, but for the past week, its been making a sound like a whiney dog when you start it. I know its bendix related, because one time even just the starter only spun, but its very rare. Occasionally it will turn over without making this sound, but most often it kinda screeches. It runs fine after starting, has all its power, compression, etc. But sometimes it turns over slower and I think its getting worse.

My question is, due to the nature, do you think it could be the bendix gear to the starter? Im not sure if this has ever broken, I know the bendix to flywheel is common for a problem of starting, but the motor 99 percent of the time will turn over, it just makes a horrible sound and is hard on the motor.

Is there any chance its not bendix related? Im sure it is. I guess Im in the market for a new bendix. So if anyone has a yamaha OEM one that works, PM me, I'll probably be needing it soon. Im going to run it as is until it breaks or until I get another bendix.

Last question, is it hard to remove the flywheel in the hull? I've down the flywheel removal on another 701 engine before and it was a real bitch, out of the hull. I guess I should try it, and then remove it if I cant get it.

We just replaced one on my buddys 93sj, the only thing that was a pita was installing and removing his factory dry pipe, I wasnt there when he pulled the flywheels but that shouldnt be tough with a puller. other than that you dont even need to pull the starter so actually the pipe might not need to be taken out, we did cuz I thought it was the starter. Just pull the tank and you have tons of room. We got the bendix new from parker yamaha for 88 fyi.

your bendy is probalby locked up...get a new one, or one that is minty fresh....

if the little spring inside is compromised you have your fly, stator and cases on the line...

trust me, between butti and I we lost 2 stators and 2 RAD's to something that we both should have known better :bad3:

I just had to replace mine also. Mine showed no signs of going. It just released its spring and it wound all around itself and seized up.

Thats the best price I've seen, but I assume you get what you pay for, as the yamaha OEM ones are 190... Has anyone used the aqua torque bendix for a long period of time with no problems? I'm stock compression, and dont forsee high compression any time soon.
