Bendix piece of crap??

I was wondering what you guys thought of a bendix that will engage almost all the time on the first attempt... even at the very beginning of the day after its been sitting all week.... then out of the blue it will just spin as I press start... then I press it again either once or twice and it always engages then... it has done this maybe once or twice every time I take my superjet out but never leaves me stranded... keep in mind I am starting my ski about 50 times or more each trip because as I'm learning tricks I fall over a lot...

Keep in mind I am using the little 4.5 lb yausa battery w/ 130cca

Its an 07 ski... bendix is of course oem.... I never sprayed any grease on it when I took it apart to put the TBM flywheel on... bendix never did it last year though with the stock battery and before I took the cover off to put on that flywheel... I have been out about prob. 10 times or more this year and it seems to happen once or twice each time....

I wonder if it is not disengaging all the way sometimes? then it will not engage unless is spins once or twice to first disengage all the way... then it will engage? I'm lost....

The only reason I care is that I dont want it to get worse and maybe leave me stranded someday or explode into my nice TBM flywheel

its possible that you didnt seal the f/w area properly when you installed the f/w and now water is getting in and rusting your bendix. thats a fairly common occurance.

This is why I refuse to use a batt that won't hang in the usual crap that goes on with modded SJ's. Its like your boat better be friggin perfect if your gonna use batts that might not hang.

I would order a brand new OEM bendix and be done with it. Or maybe a super clean used one from a member. I did that and it is working perfectly.

Oh and I didn't even see that TBM part!!

I would use a brand new OEM flywheel cover gasket and bendix for sure.

And maybe order up some JSS stator washers too.

They are GREAT and every little thing counts when protecting a friggin TBM man. That thing is a beauty.

well the only part that does not make sense to me is why does it happen right in the middle of the day??? if it was something to do with moister in the flywheel area then wouldnt it rust more when it sits during the week? Then it would do this when I first tried starting it at the lake? It happens it seems at more of a random time...

or maybe its when that little battery starts getting drained a little too much from me starting over and over without giving the battery enough time to recharge? then it just takes 2 or 3 pushes to get that bendix to fly out?

I think I will try that first....

I just hate putting that monster back in! :)

Oh well... at least it will rule out the battery... and if I can practice my tricks with an extra 8-9 pounds then it will be that much easier when I switch back!

I will have to find a different spot for my fire extinguisher..... since now it is bungied on my little battery....

Never had an issue with full size batteries with doing tricks....

wrap your fire extenguisher with hydro turf, then get a large plumbing zip tie and strap it to your battery strap.

I was just thinking about it more... if it was rusty from water it would have this problem right away first time I tried starting it after its been sitting for a few days.... that would make sense to me... since it does not do this- I doubt it is moisture inside the cover...

Sounds to me like its just some fluke thing maybe related to starting so many times with that mini-me battery... unless you guys think I should worry about it I will just let it slide unless I notice it starting to get worse....

I have the same problem with my Blaster, I think it is a worn cog slightly stripped, and it stops on that spot sometimes and that is why you get the spin then you hit it again and it's positioned in a different spot so it catches.

Remove in inspect, I bought a new bendix but have not removed the old one as of yet.

Good point replace gasket, gotta get that before I jump on mine.

Anyone know if I have to remove the motor to access the bendix or is it achiavable to do it in the hull?

Thanks

Take the tank out so you have enough room to use a flywheel puller

yep just pull the flywheel and make sure you have the thin washer on the bendix ( between the case and bendix)....also two washers belong with the front cover spring...one on each side of the front cover spring....

without these washers what will happen? I never removed the bendix but I did remove the cover so maybe I lost a washer from that spring?

I'm missing one of those 2 washers and zero issues for 2 seasons on motor.

I wasn't even sure I was missing 1 until I read this. LOL.

I have had it work fine with one washer missing on one ski...it is only a slight less spring pressure on the bendix...but I would not want a loose washer on the bottom of the case below the stator plate bouncing around....check for it in your hull...they fall both places...

part # 22 on riva parts finder shows two washers at 24 cents each for the front cover each side of the spring....the question is: where is your lost washer ? case or hull....flywheel magnets suck them up too....
