I have the same problem on a ski and I replaced the bendix only to have it spin in place and not kick out at all.The spring I refer to is on the bendix.Going to recheck cables , battery state of charge, amp draw test and then replace starter.

I keep all the old bendix's around, they are fairly simple, if you depress the front bearing collar there is a circlip, remove that and the bendix comes apart, if the one way clutch part of the bendix is still good, after a through cleaning , greasing and reassembly they usually work, if the spring on the back that holds the weights is toast a substitute can usually be gotten off of an old crankshaft seal, usually I will take two or three apart and make one usable bendix out of them.

What I use is actually an assembly lube, it probably breaks down to a liquid after it gets hot, ATF works very well for lubing up the Bendix also.I leave a few of them soaking in a cut off soda can full of ATF till I get ready to rebuild them.

Did you fix it ? with more inspection on the ski I'm working on I came to the conclusion that the Bushings in the case and in stator cover are worn out allowing the bendix to move away from flywheel instead of staying in a straight line.

Yep, sorry meant to update but I've been slammed with work. I ordered another bendix from jetmaniac and it solved my problem. Starts all day now, no slipping.
