Beach Totes

Have a stand that I built. It also doubles as your bunks for the trailer. Look up under Boris trailer for sale to see pics. Sorry guys not good with this Cumputer sh##*t. Still have this cart and has winch with smaller tires great to load in the surf one man only. Will sell in Datona. Have new cart/trailer that I use know.

i say go buy a cheap moving dolly that movers use, extend the wheels down and adapt some big off road go kart tires to it.. somthing on that line.. you guys actually pay 500 bones for these things? it would cost under 100 to make one real nice if you can weld and have tools.

Heres one I built. It works great. I need to get some better bearings. The ones I have in there now only made it one year. The whole thing only cost me about $20. I think I might put a winch on it so one person can load it by themself.

You know, me being a little slow with work right now and wanting to buy a tig setup, with the right plan for construction, one of us should really be making a bunch of these. I should crunch some numbers and see if its really worth the effort, the ones I have seen for sale are not cheap.

The metal and the wheels are expensive.
It would be intresting to see all the numbers !

Exactly, need to find a deal on wheel/tire's combinations, and unfortunatly the aluminum is like gasoline and just going up in price. The simpler design the better, with minimal labor for welding.

I did this very same thing about a year ago. Between a quality AC/DC Tig machine, tube mender, pipe notcher, cut-off saw...and the current price of $aluminum$, I just drove down to Florida Sailcraft to pick up a new Tiger Tote for $375. The price for 2 plastic or aluminum wheels with tires (the only 2 options I would ever use for resale) alone are going to set you back around $100. I was not able to reach my goal of $250 retail and still make it worth my time.

Thanks for the heads up on that, but I'm not surprised at all.

What surprised me was after we had hurricane Francis ('04) and Wilma ('05) blow through down here, all the metal recycle centers had piles of scrap aluminum at least 150 feet high for 6 months. Twisted aluminum was everywhere and as common as dirt piles. Yet the price of aluminum was and is still going up :261:

If you are going to use it on the sand, you need cubic inches!! They don't call beach carts "big foot" for nothin' :wink1:

That's why I was thing about putting two 13X5 tires on each side. They're only $15 at harbour freight. I just can't find any 18x9 tires locally, and I need one by next Wednesday. I'll take some pics after it's done.

This is probably what I'm gonna do. They have one at Lowes for $50. You can also get a piece of 5/8 all thread to make the axle wider for $10.

That is just about what mine is.....we did a lot of cutting and welding and then used some old golf cart tires.

Here's a beach tote that I welded up about 8 years ago and its still going strong. It was made from a 87' Honda 3 wheeler rear end. I made a cradle to fit standups and a adjustable handle for different length skis(square tube in a square tube sliding action) and to take out for traveling.

I have hauled my friends sitdown around with it before at the races and its held up to that, so its very sturdy and strong. It still does have the brake on the rear axle and I was going to put cable and lever on the handle for helping to stop or slow down if your walking it down a steep hill..
Also someday I want to mount a little hand crank winch right below the handle bar area with strap and hook, instead of using a tie down for holding the ski and that way I could crank it in from the water. Would be handy..

I do really like the style of Phil's(BTW Phill nice job!) and my friend Tomski has a couple of the aluminum ones like that. Those are the best IMO, cause the make a perfect water stand also.

Here are a couple pics of mine. Keep in mind that it is a couple years old and we ride every weekend. This thing is dumped in the salt water and left in it until we are done riding. Also, I am not the best on cleaning things or even just rinsing them off. It uses a stainless steel axle, bronze bushings and a couple hubs that I made out of stainless. The bolt pattern excepts standard golf cart tires that you can get for free at the golf cart shops (take offs from dry rot, leaks or just worn down). I have not replaced the wheels since I built it. Back bone is aluminum and the winch doubles as a handle for pulling it around. I can lift it by myself.
I have used a bunch of other beach totes. If you put them in a line I would pick this one every time. Definately cheap to build. Mostly just my time.
