i just took the bottom end apart in my 61x and the crank looks fine, but the front bearing makes noise, and the tech at the yamaha place said that the rod bearings had little marks on them so it wasnt good. i dont know a damn thing abt them so i didnt question his judgment when he said he would not risk running it. what can i do with this crank? should i just throw it away and get a new one?

If the pits in bearings make noise then you are turning it by hand at about 5rpm, it would create friction & heat at 5000rpm and let go. Bearings/races can't have a rough surface.
Luckily, there's lots you can do with it. You can use it for a core tradein, an anchor, a really interesting paperweight, or some type of moden art piece.

the bearing that makes the noise is one on the front of the crank... where should i look to send it in as a core.... i know sbt, but ive heard mixed things abt their stuff.

I believe every boat in st. aug right now is running an SBT crank with no problems

if your crank is in question it can be pretty bad. my boat has been running great and yesterday my crank threw a bearing and broke a rod pics in the carnage section.

not worth it if you know something is wrong with it

new crank $$
New Dome $$
New Pistons and bearings. $$

adds up pretty quick.

They are inexpensive because they use their own bearings and they have cheap labor (take that how you want it), and they do high volume. I wouldn't use their seals if I were you though, but with just a crank I think you will be OK. I am in NC also, I will see if I can find you a better alternative. -Kurt

I would call up Crank Works (480-897-1746) and talk to someone there (Phil or Craig). They are the ONLY ones I'd trust with my stroker crank. I'm certain they could rebuild your stocker for a decent price, plus you'd have an excellent crank after that. That front bearing is $150 unfortunatly. The other bearings are priced a little better. Give them a call and they'll give you a range of what it will cost.
