answers to most your footholds install questions

what foot holds to get...
1) get what ever the junk you think looks comfy... no one has feet like yours. I have REVs and I love them.

what to cut your ski with....
1) rotozip / dremel or some such tool
2) jigsaw
3) sawzal (that might be over kill)
4) yamaslut has been known to use a chain saw...

what to glue your holds in with...
1) epoxy resin / hardener mixed with a filler such as west system 404. (this is how I do it)
2) 3M 5200 (kind of iffy- I don't think I would do it this way)
3)some girl on pwctoday said use contact cement (this is probably your best bet!)

what to hold the foot holds snug while the glue dries...
1)stainless steel screws (remove when the glue dries and fill in holes with the same thing you glued the holds on with or just grind the screws down and glass over them)
2) rivets leave them in after its dry and glass over them

what glass to use....
1) cloth conforms to curves better
2) mat is stronger harder to work with

what weight cloth to use
10-20 oz should work pretty good.

what epoxy resin to use...
1) west systems dries clear just over 100 bucks for a gallon of resin and hardener
2) us composites dries more yellow about 50 bucks for a gallon of resin and hardener. Add some color die for 5 bucks and it looks pretty...
3) do not use polyester resin on your ski it wont stick

how many layers of glass to put over the glued in foot holds
2 to 3 should do the trick

what foam to use...
1) 2 part foam 2-4 pound
2) great stuff (not the best and it doesn't expand with out oxygen)

Places to get supplies...
1) www.uscomposites.com (carry west systems and uscomposite brand)

basic instructions
  1. cut holes in gunwales (careful not to get it to far froward or the foot holds wont fit with the exhaust)
  2. dig out foam so the holds fit, If you are refoaming dig out all the foam.
  3. test fit holds
  4. test fit again
  5. drill small holes for the screws through the holds and hull. this is so the fiberglass does not split. the holes should be spaced about 2 inches apart.
  6. mix epoxy and hardener and 404 filler together until you have a peanut butter constancy
  7. screw them in and wipe/feather excess epoxy. Make sure no epoxy is in the screws or you will be grinding them out. You will most likely be grinding some any ways.
  8. remove screws when dry (leave rivets in if you used them)
  9. make sure all the screw holes are either filled in or that they have plenty of glass over them to keep them water tight. lay a couple layers of glass all around foot holds and between the holds on the tray. The tray area will be weak in between the holds so make sure you get this step done.
  10. sand and turf

*tip* more resin does not make it stronger. use a squeegee if possible to get all the excess resin out. the fiber glass needs to be totally wet-ed out and thats it. Any extra is just extra weight. It will not make your ski stronger.

this video is a little dated but it has some stuff right. You will be better off following the advice given above.

You don't use contact cement to glue your footholds in with .
Don't listen to whomever said that :frown:
you use that for the turf afterwards:headbang:

Always use epoxy resin with 404 filler or similar to that .
Nothing beats West Systems :headbang:

I was thinking the other day about how we do not have a lot of good info on this site yet. most of it is all over at pwctoday. so I thought I would start with this. alot of you guys are going to know more than me so make a post and I will edit this. then hopefully we can avoid the having 20 pages of foot hold questions. just point new people to this. oh and this is the info I have gathered mostly from over there.

yeah, don't use contact cement. In fact, 24:7 sends you the panel fusor they recommend using for the install. Then sand and go over the edges with fiberglass cloth.

How much epoxy do u need for putting them in?.
I got a quart in total of fasco 110 2 part epoxy from USC.
will this be enough epoxy for both footholds?.
If my garage is something like 40 deg.faren,is it okay to epoxy them in at that temp?.
What would the cure time be and do i have to use heat lamps?
Don't plan on using it until this friggin snow stops and it warms up .

A quart should be enough ,warm up the epoxy in your house first and try warming th ski first too but it will still setup in the cold anyway it will just take longer ,Don't put the lamps too close just about 18 inches away.Put the lamps on your ski a while before you do the fix and footholds too and it will set up nice for ya

Use screws to hold the footholds in place then take em out after and glass over the holes .cookie the rivets you don't need em :headbang:

Yeah thanks hangtime, i'm installing them the way wammer does (with screws not rivets)
He's a cool dude, spent some time on the phone with him on the install.
He gave me a really good deal on a mat & foothold kit.

:joke: i really hope no one will take that for real. if they do than they have bigger problems than some crappy foothold install...

It wont expand and cure as full or as firm as the real 2 part polyurethane foam.

It wont fill the cavity as well, or give the same strength.

spray some down in a coke bottle, and let it expand. Did it fully fill the bottle?

pour some 2 part down in there and watch the difference.

They also claim the Great Stuff will disolve some factory foam and make it into a goo that will never harden in the hull. Something about the lack of air to cure it, or something. I was told never to use it, it may be waterproof, but it won't cure inside a hull.:scared:
