Another venting thread

WTF i am so freaking pissed i'm ready to tie my motor to my ankle and jump off the dock. i put in my new magoo motor in april, then went to go start it up in early may. nothing. so i tore off the pipe thinking it was the starter, but it worked fine. then i opened the electrical box just to find a blown fuse. so that sucked. got everything put back together, went to start it up, and the starter was just spinning, WTF. so i went and coughed up the big bucks for a new bendix, put it in, then everything was fine. now the last week or so i've been trying to get the new motor tuned in, and it was just being way too lean. paul overnighted me some larger jets so i'd have them for the weekend. i installed the new jets and put the carbs back on, went to start the motor, and it turned over for a few seconds then came to an abrupt stop. starter just clicks. i went to turn the crank to make sure the motor didn't lock up, and it's completely froze. at this point i'm just about ********ting my pants, but then i spin it the other way and it frees up. go to start it again, still just a click. put in a new relay, click. attached the starter to a 12v jump box, click. so now i get to tear the entire thing back down just to cough up another couple hundred bucks for a freaking starter. sorry for the long vent but i'm ready to shoot myself.

in the future, check all electronics before you tear out that starter. There are several things that will likely fail before you see the starter go out. Not to mention, switch, connectors, fuse, relay are all easier to deal with than pulling the pipe.

//you like how I just shared something that you already figured out for yourself the hard way? haha. I'm sorry.

Factory pipe? I'm pretty sure I've removed the starter dozens of times without taking off the pipe. However (if it is a factory pipe) it's so easy to take off the J pipe.

yea it's a factory pipe, but it sure as hell isn't easy to remove. i have to remove the battery tray, gas tank (full), then the chamber and headpipe. hopefully i can remove it without taking the pipe out like you said, that'd be killer.

well the problem with that is since i have an aftermarket hull, the set-up is a little different. i have tried to remove just the headpipe before, and it wouldn't come out because the manifold is closer to the side of the hull (narrower hull). i may be able to just tuck the headpipe back enough to get at the starter though, i'll have to check it out tomorrow.

That sucks..........we have about the same set up, what jets did Paul reccomend you go up too? I may need to get some to keep in my tool box.

Whew, that does suck. Always check the fuse first, haha. Also, if it still clicks, the relay probably isnt bad, but that's a cheap part anyways, so you have an extra for when it does go bad. :)

I started off with 115 pilots and 112.5 mains, and now we're up to 120 pilots and 115 mains. i haven't gotten to run these yet because of my awesome luck, but i'll let you know how it goes.

so does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing these problems. i would like it to be coincidence, but it seems a little wierd that i have a broken fuse, bad bendix, then bad starter, in that order, in less than a month's time.

Last weekend had the same symptoms.... I thought it was the bendix and I tryed one more time to start and got just the click noise like it was seized and would not turn over, well my positive on the batter terminal was hanging and not geting a contact. If I was you I would check all the battery cables and wires. then go from there.

Then BRAP... and away we go ! :woot:

Hang in there dude, everyone has times like this every once in a while. The good news is, when your done replacing EVERYTHING, it's all going to be new. you'll be able to get the starter off without removing the pipe, it just takes some paitence. call me if you need any help, i'm just down the road.

pete, yea i checked all the connections. i even took them all off then put them back on. still just a click. i'm a little worried as to why the motor was locked up and had to be spun the other way to free it. maybe it's just something simple like the bendix was stuck on the flywheel or something.:dunno:

CG, sounds good. i'm gonna try and get into it as soon as this thunder stops (it's still out on the lift) and i'll give you a call if i need anything. thanks!

I just had a similar problem on my SJ, press the button and nothing.

Battery was good, cables were good, so I thought it was the solenoid. To the solenoid out of my spare 62t and still nothing.

Turned out that I burnt the brown start wire inside the plastic almost up to the electrical box. replaced that wire, and Braaap....

Good luck.

hang in there. We've all been there. Have patinents. (This is where it helps to have a stock backup ski so you don't feel the pressure to get it running NOW.) You have a new hull, but everything else is 10-15 years old, time to replace some parts.

Your electrical box was wet, did you replace parts in there over the winter or just clean it up?

haha yea, that sad thing here is that i do have a stock backup ski (SXR) but after riding this hull and can't stand riding anything else. i did clean up the electrical box over the winter and everything's fine now. the only thing i had to replace was the cdi which wasn't broken (was going with msd anyway) and the fuse, which didn't look like it blew, it just kind of fell apart.

i took the starter out today and it's all locked up. i took it apart and it's badly rusted, so time to piss away some more money...

You'll enjoy the aftermarket starters, they spin so much faster than stock. Great for starting modified engines.:Banane01:
