Another useless foam ( FYI ) tid bit

I 'm in the process of installing some different foot holds . i cut the xft x-3s out and low and behold what did i find . Let's say it together class ........ WET FOAM ! ......... very good . I dug my way out with in a few inches , but have decided to de foam and go the styrofoam route . i also did a little test i placed a small piece of dry foam into a glass of high quality H2O . i kept the foam submerged for 24 hours . The start weight was 2.6 grams the ending weight was 8.1 grams . That is quite a bit of absorption. The sample piece was oem foam . I don't know how us composite would fair . I'll do some styrofoam next . In addition , to be fair to XFT it should be noted that they were installed using only some epoxy and not wrapped with glass . IMO not installed properly .

I have no experience with it, but Fiberglast has a 2# two part foam that they say doesn't absorb water. I thought that was an interesting claim, but who knows how it would work in the real world because US Composites claims theirs 'resists the absorption of water'. I wonder if they'd be willing to send out a sample or maybe repeat your same test?

How is regular styrofoam made? (The non absorbant Beer cooler foam) Is it poured wet similar to the two parts we all use or is it injection molded by some mechanical process?

Expanded polystyrene (styrofoam) must be over 2lbs per cu ft before it won't soak up water.Vac. extruded polystyrene is much better for no soaky the water.

Where did the 'test foam' come from?

I tested several types of Stepanfoam when I worked in an aerospace materials lab. I could not get any of it to gain more than 1% after ten days under 1 foot of water. Surfboard builders use this mil-spec quality foam. Yamaha used cheap shipping foam.

Where can you buy some of this high quality foam at??

I just weighed the pink home depot foam .

OEM foam Pink home depot styrene foam

Start 2.6 grams Start 2.6 grams

End 8.7 grams 3.5 grams




Results............ what ever you want to infer . I don't know if you could say oem foam can / will absorb water up to 3.3 times its own weight in water , but you probably would want to seriously look at other options for re foaming.
