I agree 10mm stroker motors have good longevity and produce that torque needed for quick throttle response which can add to your fun in the surf. I could get 1 hr 15 minutes ride time with 900R 10mm with 46's.

My predator is a 10mil 1000 on DASA 48 carbs and 148 pump
My reaper is a ss 850 on stock 46's and a 145 pump
Both b pipe and stock electronics (enhancers and light flywheels)
My predator I can get about 1h15 min
Reaper is 1h30 but could go maybe 10 more min I just don't want to risk it
When I ride the predator then go to the reaper I'm always like man this engine just rips and I can't really tell the difference between the two.....until I then ride the predator again. The 10 mil just has so much more grunt than the SS it's crazy. Easiest way to describe it is the 850 is a 250f and the 1000 is a 450 dirt bike. Simplest way to compare. You really can rip off any trick combo in any condition since you can just floor it at the bottom of a small wave with hardley any run in and still get around and still throw a big combo. The 850 you need to have some run up to get up in the air
I rode my 10mill for 14 months. I ride all the time. Like all the time. We took it apart before surf slam and we only needed to change 1 piston if we really wanted too! We decided to just change them both anyway and that is the extent of my maintinece. Mind you, I never sunk this motor so that helped longevity as well but as far as having more maintenance on a big engine, that hasn't been the case

I was for some time a 701 FTW kinda guy. I had my limited 701 and mag pump and I preached forever that it's enough. In my waves in Oside on a big day, sure it's enough, knee to waist high, nope. Super boring. No flips.
Mind you I don't use trim.
I set up my Euro boat for IFWA last year and I made it the same as my boat at home. 850 SS 46 145 mag pump.
Everyone that year mostly had 950 and 1000 even 1200 and I was like screw that noise I don't need to die. 850 is the best out there.
I went against pierre in the uk and it was a very weak and lazy wave. And shallow. Pierre had a 8mm 950 with a stock 144 pump and was going to the moon. He could wait until the wave was correct and launch UP into the air getting big amplitude.
My set up I had to get a run since mine doesn't have that low stroker grunt. So I'd come from far back almost WFO, time the curl, hit it, throw a Madonna or whatever big variation, and juuuuust under rotate and hit the ground.....
I was hitting the waves so hard I was exploding through the waves and going FAR in distance, not UP in height. I lost the round even though I had more technical tricks, I just couldn't match pierres amplitude.
That was the last time I ran an 850 and 145 in a competition ski. The U.K. Changed my perspective on what to run for contests.
My next ski is my current. 10mil 1000 148. It is the ultimate competition ski and fun factor ski. You can hit small or big waves, no trim, get around, go HIGH and force combos.
In the end, if you ride big waves, 701 will work. If you ride big waves and also medium waves, the 850 will work. If you ride big waves and also knee high waves and you have 6 min to throw down in any condition trying to win, the 1000 Destroys the 701 and 850. Best all around power, linear, and reliable.
In competition. More power is ALWAYS better than not enough power.
Ps, I feel like the skis handle better with more power. If your off balance and falling over, just pin it out of it. Re entries are so much easier. Rolls off anything. Flips off anything. Spins anything. Easier to surf ride having more bottom grunt. I will always run the 1000.
Definitely have to get used to it in big waves though and be careful with throttle control.
What else is a trip is I feel like the 850 in the reaper is the max amount of power I want in that hull. It's wider hull makes it flip faster than the predator so I think more would be scary.

Completely makes sense when you put it like that.
So, thinking it through I need a competition motor I can run without the worry of running short on fuel.
For where I ride I need a motor that will do 1hr 30 mins so sadly I'm never going to have anything like a 1000 cc.

That's my current thinking and a ride buddy is just about to go down that route. I have been offered a Dasa 900 10 mil so maybe that with 46's will be a good combo.No worries mate.
What about the 5 gallon in the front and the rear 2 gallon tank? That way you have 7 gallons and should be able to get 2.5 hours with a 1000?
Can't do that where i ride sadly as the tides are huge....We get movement of up to 9 meters so the beach is always changing.just carry a gas can on your back to the beach? wouldn't be hard to make that work
If you have a good pump and run oem 46s for carbs won't use much more gas than a limited 701 setup. Keep your props fresh and pull up on the beach the least you can. I use less gas in my 850 then guys I ride with with a 701/bpipe set up


If you're referring to Seth's titan, i think its an 1100? But yes 45 minutes is sadAnother rider in our group runs 1000 10 mil, 49carbs and lasts 45min per tank. My engine (48carbs) lasts 1h10min. Both engines have plenty of manageable power for the surf and instant response bottom to top.
I run bpipe, he runs PFP.

So judging by the replies i've come to a conclusion that there's no real answer to this as everyone has thier own needs when it comes to a set up.
