A superjet's day in hell

So after getting everything all said and done yesterday, my ski finally is finished regardless of the battery issue(got a spare for temp purposes).

I launched my ski today, tuned my carbs to pauls recommendations(1.5 turns low, .5 turn on the highs.

Anyways, ski runs flawless for 10 min. No hesitation, no loading up, ski is right on. Well all of a sudden the ski starts sputtering out right in the middle of the lake. Thank god my sister was there, but she had to go back and get a tow rope for me. What I didnt realize till about a few min later was the front of the ski was sinking a bit in the water(the extra weight in the gas tank from being full didnt' help.

Anyways, she had gone back in and back out twice bc the rope wasn't short enough to hook around the front of the ski, and my ski kept on sinking. Well, after 2 tries of getting the right tow rope, my whole front ski is almost underwater. I finally get it tied down and stuff, and then i rode in the tray while she tows me in(while the ski is completely nosediving underwater). Keep in mind my attwood has been on the whole time, or my ski would be at the bottom of the lake.

So I take my ski on my hoist, let the water drain out and get another bilge pump from land in there(ski is completely full). I tried to start it after all the water was out(Bad mistake), and I hydrolocked the motor. Panicking, I called up my buddy al(jetdude), pulled the plugs, spayed wd 40 and ether, started cranking the water out. Lots of water for sure, but it started to clear up

So as I was cranking, I noticed my coupler on my chamber is off, and I finally figured out why my ski was leaking and looking like it was overheating inside. Finally get the bastard started up and idled, then I sprayed fogging oil in the cylinders and in the carbs since I had to leave for a wedding party.

Moral of the story: Never ride alone if possible, and don't get overconfident even if you think the ski runs right. Ride in the shallow spot if possible.

Boy what a day:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Actually my pump was still pumping after all that, but only 1 500gph bilge isn't going to keep all the water out when your chamber is disconnected in the middle of the lake.

Tiplicka, I guarantee my coupler slid forward bc I must have slid the chamber forward when I put it into the hose from the waterbox(I tightened the clamps up already on the coupler). As long as everythings hooked up right, youll be fine. Hell, my motor is alive and kicking after all this, so now I know for future reference what NOT to do.

You said Ether. You do know NOT to spray that in the cylinders but just on the plugs? Roast a cyclinder pretty fast with it directly in the hole. Sometimes you might get lucky but why chance it

moral of the story is if your ski started sinking and you needed towed in, you should never try to turn it over with the plugs still in... good way to lose a crank.

Yeah, Jesse knows all about the hydrolock and bend a rod trick. That is one I hope to keep out of my routine.

When I didn't put it back in I thought to myself....eh, I don't think that will be the extra litle bit that keeps it from going under.

In my case, I left it out because my dog ate it :(.

i have sunken a few skis before, ive never seen them go any deeper than this, and if the ski was completely filled with water, than my guess would have been that water got in every whole possible, super lucky you didnt bend a rod, everyone learns from there mistakes, usually the exspensive ones

T-bone: I have pic in my mind from when my ski looked like that! only my hood was on! No bid deal, drained it out and ended up towing in Jetskier79 that day. (Sorry Jer, that is a prety funny story)
