Did you check the compression on the 550 before you removed and installed the ADA?
was ~145 on my gauge
~175 now

some more context
he previously had an over-bored 550 reed reed motor, took a gulp of water when a waterline connector broke and fell apart. Worst crankshaft I've ever seen in my life, but it had this gnarly shaved head.. said 205 on my gauge and was fast as hell. :p

we got lucky and got another super clean reed motor stock bore, refreshed it and its been rocking since.. bits and pieces at a time with it.

It's 1/2 pipe, reed motor stock bore, high comp head now, SBN44. It is super solid

I had a 91 550sx, Picked up a Westcoast head for it. Right before I started to remove it, I checked compression. Right at 170 lbs. Stock head, Gave the Westcoast back! Didnt see any need in swapping.

Gauge variance is real. It's all fairly relative

My 760 doesn't read 180 on the dot either

That said some of the 550pp's I have laying around look great and hold a consistent 110-115psi

So
Huge mod compared to a stock pp would be my guestimate

In the case of the 550sx reed
It noticably woke it up a bit further.

I don't believe it to be smoke & mirrors anyway.
