93 SN Bogging

Sup guys! Finally part of the stand up ski family. Bought my first 93 Superjet a few days ago and really excited to get into it!

So my ski is bone stock and actually pretty clean from the looks of things. I took it out to the lake the other day and after 5 min or so it bogged down. Couldn't get past 1/8 throttle without it bogging and any more and it would die. It will idle flawlessly and start up on a dime every time. The guy I bought it from haven't ridden it for a year or so. Next day went and bought some fresh plugs as maybe the original were fouled and also filled the rest of the half tank remaining with fresh fuel. Went out and it rode good for about 10 min then bogged down again. Still will idle smooth though.

Any obvious clues here? Could it be the half tank of old gas that was remaining? Lack of air flow? Fuel starvation? Possible leak? I already ordered a genuine Mikuni carb rebuild kit. Hoping that will fix it. Figured I'd ask around here to see where else I might look into while waiting for the parts to come.

Thanks guys

The first thing I do when I buy a ski is remove the tank and clean it out real well then fill with fresh fuel. Check fuel flow to make sure there's not a blockage which the fuel selector can be a culprit. It would be a good idea to go through the carb as well. There is a small fuel filter on the fuel pump side of the carb that can clog up.

I have never had that issue with a ski but twice I have had a boat with a clogged fuel filter act the same way. For $6 and 5 minutes work I would replace that fuel filter. Post 3 more times and then send @JetManiac a pm and get a new filter and check out his other stuff. He is a great guy to deal with, great prices, and fast shipping. I'm not saying this will fix it but it may and I would be doing it anyways.

Yeah I plan on cleaning out the fuel filter once I rebuild the carbs. Should I remove the fuel selector and clean it out to make sure no build up is causing blockage?

You don't need to remove the selector. Just blow compressed air through fuel supply line. Any fuel in the line will be sent to the tank so don't worry about a fuel spill. Just make sure air can pass through when it's in the reserve and on position. Also, if the air doesn't pass through the line freely there may be an obstruction in the selector.

Stick with stock they are great for keeping water out and won't hinder performance. Get that ski running good then look to upgrade parts. You need a good foundation to build off.

Will do thanks. Also one person told me another good starting point to my bog issue is to reset the high/low speed jets back to factory specs. Said it's possible the previous owner could've mucked with the settings or could've changed on its own somehow over the years. Should I bother with this now or worry about it when rebuilding the carbs?

Well if you were more experienced I would say go ride it without the hood but if you havnt been riding very long don't try that, see if you can see smoke coming out anywhere in the exaust system with the hood off out of the water

I would be able to ride without hood no problem but nowhere around with flat water.

This might sound completely noobish but should smoke be coming out of the rear exhaust? If I run it on my trailer on the water I can see smoke (not a lot though) coming out. And when out of water I can definitely see smoke when I rev followed by small back fires.

So I started to dissemble the carbs and boy was the fuel filter full of crap!

Yup. Just got back from the lake and damn it ran like a champ! So fuel filter was the culprit. Now I don't know if I feel like taking it apart again and rebuilding once my Mikuni kit gets delivered Monday lol
