92 SN only runs for a second when putting gas in carb???

Ok I need help! Im a newbie and this old SN has been sitting up. I replaced the battery cleaned up the ski. Drained the gas put new gas in and tried to start it. So when it wouldnt start I removed the plugs cleaned put a couple drops of gas in. Then removed the top casing on the carb put a bit of gas in and BAM!!! ran for like 15 seconds great. I know this means fuel line/ filter probs.?... Any sugestion or similar probs out there. So i dont spend all day freakin out.

I would be willing to bet your carburetor needs to be gone through. You may be able to get by without a rebuild kit but its a good idea, and would cost $30 or $40. You might also consider a new fuel filter.

First thing would be to pull the carb and go through it.

Had it happen a couple weeks ago on my ski that sat for a while, my needle and seat were stuck closed. Ran great dumping fuel in the carb, fuel was clearly pumping in and out of the carb, but wasn't getting into the engine. When I pulled the carb and checked it, everything looked clean, but needle was stuck closed. I just pulled it out, cleaned it up and it's worked perfect since.

I want to say ParkerYamaha.com for the best prices but I dont know.

This is the link for the fuel filter I think, check your part # once removed. You may not need one, unless its black with crud or varnished fuel.

I would pull the carb off, take it apart carefully so you don't tear any gaskets and clean/inspect. If it needs it get the rebuild kit

Lots of possible causes. Dirty carb, water in gas, clogged fuel line or filter, gas not turned on, rotted pickup in tank, etc.

I'd start with carefully pulling the carb apart and cleaning everything. Clean n/s and jets. Inspect everything else and try again.

i would put money on that carb being nice and gunked closed. but even if going through the carb fixes it in the short term i would pull the lines off the carb and take the pickup out of the tank. spray some compressed air through them and make sure they arent blocked. and in the long term buy some new fuel line. those old lines (at least in mine) like to start cracking and falling apart causing little pieces of rubber to be ingested (or attempted) by the carb. fuel line is cheap and good insurance on such an old fuel system.

That OEM line seems to hold up forever though. If it's in good shape, just leave it alone. Fuel filter and checking the pick up in the tank is a good idea.
I'm placing my money on the carb though.

While you have the carb apart for cleaning the n/s and jets, don't forget to pull the fuel pump side of the carb apart too and clean the cylinder shape fuel screen in there too. Those get gunked up.
