90 super jet motor...is it junk?

Hey guys, new to the x. So here is the story. Bought a superjet for a good price, needed the starter put back in...yadda yadda yadda. I put it back together (after realizing the Bendix wasn't engaging.) Anyways, got it running, took it out for the old test and tune. Seemed to rip, then I heard a pop, and it seemed as it was running on one cylinder(which I concluded must have been the temp sensor retarding the motor.) Dumbass me didn't hook up the intake cooling hose, so it got hot, and full of water.

Didn't sound blown however. So took it out again, and seemed like a significant power loss. (Made sure everything was hooked up correctly before the ride this time.)

So I took motor apart, and everything looked ok, but top of pistons had some black carbon looking stuff, telling me it got a little warm. .....So what I am wondering, if I put a new gasket kit in it, will it work, or should pistons be replaced?

Any input would be helpful, thanks!

Its supposed to have carbon on the piston tops, not having any would show water injestion or more likely over rich. Anyways-the only way to tell is to do a compression test and see what your working with.
